Modifying magazines...a slightly different question

I am saving up for an M1 Carbine rechambered to 45 win mag. Some of you may be familiar with the Lemag carbine conversion, this is what I am getting.

It uses the standard M1 carbine mags, very slightly modified.

My question is, is it legal, illegal or a grey area to modify more magazines for this?

It would be using pre-ban hi-caps, or pre/post ban lo-caps. All magazines will be used in the same weapon they were designed for.

The 15rd changes to a 6rd, the 20rd changes to an 8rd, the 30 rd is the only one that might still hold more than 10 rds.

I know you cannot modify, say, an AK hi cap to fit a non-AK, at least not anymore. And I know that you can't modify a lo-cap to hold morte than 10 rds, pre-ban or not.

But this is different.

Thanks for any responses, speculation or otherwise.

From what I've read, you can make minor alterations to a pre-ban high cap magazine as long as it still functions in the gun it was manufactured for. If it fails that test, you have made a new magazine.

Your situation may be different, since you are altering a high-cap to take less than 10 rounds. If you did that, and it didn't work in the original gun, but couldn't hold more than 10 rounds, then you wouldn't be manufacturing a post-ban high-cap magazine.

Of course, this is all subject to the whims of the current BATF interpretation. I'd write to the BATF and get something - in writing- that you can go on. I wouldn't rely on just a phone call because you'll have no documentation in case it comes down to a court case.

Definitely.

Right now I'm just fishing for relavant info/experiences.

Olympic modifies their pre-ban hicaps for their pistol conversions, so I have to assume there is at least some grey room to maneuver in here.

There's a small cottage industry that modifies existing magazines for newer guns. We've seen the Suomi 72 rd SMG drum mags and Uzi mags converted for the 9mm AR-15. The Suomi has also been modified for the MP-5 and yes, anybody with the ducats can buy them (provided they can bring it into their state).
