Modifying AR Front Flip Up Sights.....

My BCM build came with LWRC flip up sights and the post on the front sight is really wide when I go out to 100 yards and shoot at targets with 3" bullseyes. I have adjusted the sight where I keep the bullseye "On Top" of the post but at 100 yards or more the post is much wider than the bullseye. Is there another brand of flip up front sight anyone can recommend with a thinner front post? I could grind the post on each side myself but the exterior coating would be ruined and I suppose selling the sight rather than tearing it up would be the best option. Thanks...

A few manufacturers sell the individual front sight post. Look around, pick something you like, unscrew the factory post and screw in the new one. Problem solved. KNS might be a good place to start looking.

I put this Hi Viz sight on mine and I love it. During the day all you really see is the dot works great for me.

Check with LWRC, if that's a proprietary blade then a GI front post may not work.

Flip ups are BUIS only, not a working front sight for distance shooting, as discovered. They are largely there to provide a "something is better than nothing" alternative for a CQB gun, which largely limits their use to short ranges.

Another issue is they mount on the free float, which is pulled hither and yon by hand and sling pressure, wandering away from the point of aim. Precision sights are on the barrel, and a free float isolates deviations, not channels them in. That means flipups are generally not a good choice for much.

They seem to be extremely popular with the dress up crowd, tho. :D

Depends on which folding sights you install.

As an example one of the 2 GG&G MAD sights had 5 apertures set for (I think) 0-200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 yards.

Hardly a "something is better than nothing alternative for a CQB gun, which largely limits their use to short ranges."

"Another issue is they mount on the free float..."

Again it depends on the specific sights.

Most seem to be made in 2 heights, one for mounting on the handguard and the other, taller front sight is made to be mounted on a railed gas block ON THE BARREL.

Thanks for all the information. I found that Brownells sells the KNS front sight posts individually in different configurations without having to buy a set. :)

I received the thinner front post on the right of the picture last night, mounted it, and tried out 20 rounds this morning at 100 yards with a slight bit of adjustment. 18 out of 20 in a 3" circle. For me this is more than good results. The wider post for me was much wider than the 3" target at 100 yards and this works for me much better.

UT, It wasn't my intention that you needed to buy the whole set, just wanted to give you an idea of how many options there were. Glad it worked out well.
