Modern Full Size with a Safety and Mag Disconnect?

Hi all. I am maybe looking for a poly carry gun with the disconnect and a safety. I have read some very interesting cases that argue 'for' the idea of both of these in a carry or defense gun.

So which ones come with the dreaded disconnect and a frame (easily reached) safety in a 9mm service weapon?

I understand all the arguments for a non safety ready to go weapon, but if a bad guy gets it from you, you are toast.

You're pretty toast even with the safety. If you mean just the thumb safety if you can struggle over a weapon and not disengage a safety you're better than me. The goal is to preserve weapon retention, not bet that the guy won't see the safety. That said it's your call.

Off the top of my head, the Ruger SR series of pistols has both a magazine disconnect and a thumb safety. I know you can get a S&W M&P with a magazine disconnect as well as one with a thumb safety, I'm just not sure about both (I would imagine so). I prefer the M&P personally, especially so for the thumb safety models as I think the M&P safety is much easier to manipulate than the SR safety.

I don't pick a carry gun based on what might happen if it's taken away from me. I trust my training and situational awareness to make sure that doesn't happen.

The Ruger SR series is the only poly I can think of that has both the thumb safety and mag disconnect. I have the SR9c and I find the safety extremely easy to manipulate, same exact motion on draw as my 1911s and BHP so I have no issue at all with it.

Has a glockish trigger, but I find my SR9c's trigger superior to any of the stock triggers on my Glocks.

Does not in any way answer the OP's question.

My preference is for double-action semi-auto. Keep it with cartridge in chamber and hammer down, safety off. That way it is ready immediately with no hassle of mags, slide, etc.

The M&P has either safety or mag disconnect but not both in same gun. I just bought an all black sr9. Love it so far. And the mag disconnect and manual safety were the primary reasons I chose it over the M&P. I owned a Shield once. Nice gun. I now have an LC9-S.

Let me rephrase my response so that it more directly answers the OP's apparent concerns and, hopefully, alleviates yours about other peoples posts.

OP - Rather than choose a gun based on how it will be used against you if/when it's taken, you might consider choosing the gun you shoot best. Then address your concerns over being disarmed by getting some weapon retention training and working on improving your situational awareness.

I have no issues with safeties, I carry 1911s, however a magazine disconnect can work against you as much as for you. Chances are better that you'll drop your magazine accidently in a fight while trying to hang on to your gun, rendering it useless to you, than intentionally while trying to disable it so it can't be used against you.

If your gun is your only defense, assume you're dead if it's taken. Doesn't matter how many safeties it has.

I'm not one who has a problem with thread drifts and advice that doesn't necessarily answer directly the OP's question, I believe that's the nature of a friendly and open discussion. Discussion is why I come here. :)

But arguing against a magazine disconnect safety as if it's a possible detriment is a slippery slope when also choosing to declare that you carry a 1911 for defense as we could certainly make arguments about the need to sweep a manual safety down before getting the handgun in to action. Or, we could re-direct and talk about the very real possibility of not having a quality grip on the handgun and defeating the grip safety. These can be genuine, real issues -- perhaps (arguably?!) no more or less than the idea that you'll lose a magazine and ultimately lose your ability to fire that one single round in the chamber.

I don't really feel like it's germane to this particular thread to dissect the idea of having to sweep a safety out of the way... much like I don't think it's much on-topic to answer a guy looking specifically for a mag-disconnect enabled handgun with a suggestion that he's looking for the wrong feature in his handgun.

Would be far different if we opened the thread with "Mag discconect: yes or hell no?"

In this case, he's looking for a handgun with a manual safety and a mag disconnect. I want (very much! :D) to suggest a Smith & Wesson 1st, 2nd or 3rd Gen, but he's also looking for polymer. Because of that, I won't tell him to get a 3919... and I won't suggest a Remington 870 either, even if there are fine reasons to choose either. :p

Snarky backhanded comments aside, your second post does bring the discussion of the pros and cons of a mag disconnect into better focus. I personally don't believe:

Chances are better that you'll drop your magazine accidently in a fight while trying to hang on to your gun, rendering it useless to you, than intentionally while trying to disable it so it can't be used against you.

is true if you put that into your training and mindset. Situational awareness training is great, we all need to thing about and practice it, BUT blitz attacks can happen even to the most prepared person. Having another option prepared might be useful, that's up to the user.
