In light of recent developments at TFL http://www.thefiringline.com:8080/forums/showthread.php?threadid=39142 .

Where is everyone going to go to kick back and talk about FUD and Shiner? I usually only post in the General forum because for now that's where I feel most comfortable. I don’t have that much to offer in the way of experience and try my best to stay away from Legal (I woke my fiancee one night yelling at the ‘puter). I usually just offer my age and promote my beloved Bul when a plastic/hi-cap 1911 thread comes up.
When I joined up I was allowed an opportunity to get to know many people here and now that is closed off. So I am just looking for ways to help myself stay current with TFL “community” outside of gun stuff. If you have to close this thread that's fine just someone drop me an e-mail.

I think I can guess the response you will receive: You can talk to them via email. Of course, this is going to bring about a loss of the sort of fellowship that is exactly why TFL is so popular. But it's not my decision to make, and I doubt they want my opinion on it.

Sometimes when something gets too far off course you've got to swing the wheel real hard in the other direction to straiten it out.

Be respectful and balance will be resumed soon.

To make myself more clear this is not a flame or b!tch post. I am just wondering(sp?). Any problems then just close the thread. I love reading locked post! :)

JJR I hope you are right. In the mean time I'm not relly worried. I like it here.

JCH Your thread has been banned! ;)

RikWriter, ditto.

Doesn't really bother me as I got a chance to know most of the other members already, and know what they think about a number of issues related to and some very unrelated to RKBA.

Jack99, that scout thread is still red hot. :)

And it isnt like it wasnt posted before. I think we all just got too comfortable talking with one another and it kept getting off topic.Just MNSHO.

I think maybe we could all feel better if we had more left wing liberal gun grabbers here trying to fight us. But we all know how long they last.HelgeS where are you?

BTW are members posting "I'm new here and like what I've read so far" going to be locked because they are OT? Just kidding!

Hey, look for my email!

Although I believe TFL has strayed off the path, many strong friendships have been built through various off-topic discussions. There WILL BE new gun owners who wander upon this site and will be too shy or uncomfortable offering advice or their two cents, period. The General Discussion Forum provided these new gun owners a place to learn more and know more about the outstanding members on TFL.

Who will this policy hurt the most? It won't bother me at all. I enjoy discussing firearms and politics. There are many on this forum I recognize and talk to offline. However, there are many others who may not be as comfortable. Again, who will suffer from the enforcement of this policy?

In the end, do with this board as you wish. After all, it's Rich's board to begin with...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I miss the contributions of the staff as members. Although no one has said so, I believe the staff here was largely chosen on the strength of their posts as members. Since there's only so much time staff can spend here, the more time they moderate, the less time they contribute. It's like taking the best of the best away from us. I would prefer to have it an open forum, but given the choice of more moderated or none, it's a no brainer. Your *vote* here is going to be tabulated I'm thinking. No you won't vote on the issue, your posts will be your vote. To partially quote: "Ask not,,,,,"

I, too, will miss the social intercourse (don't be dirty!!) of General.

But if you're in someone else's house, you play by their rules, I guess ....

Sad just the same.

As a newbie here, one of the things that I find appealing is the comeraderie you guys have, but I can also see how great numbers of OT posts can detract from the purpose of the board. So I'm curious - has anybody thought about a TFL mailing list, or maybe a separate board, just for off-topic chat and socializing? I could run a mailing list from our server, and would welcome the opportunity to gain experience in doing something I haven't done yet. I don't have cash available just now for UBB, though. Any thoughts?

Guys - Do this for me, please.
Imagine all the people - all the posts... The resources that all the people pulling info off the TFL SERVER... It's a lot. An awful lot. Normal Forums this big dont use the UBB program. Thats just a little part of this issue. The other parts is that this is a Second Amendment, RKBA, Guns, Safety, etc, forum... Not a Water Heater Forum, not a My Dog Has Fleas Forum... Not a Weather forum...
Its about guns.
Thats what Rich started this for - so people can have a place to talk guns and ask questions free from Flamers and Spammers.
There is still a CHEERS like feeling - TFL is kinda Family to me, you know? You can ask a question and no one will call you stupid.
TFL has rolled up all the other gun forums, extracted the best of the best, and then put it to the higher road. Whats wrong with that? Imagine HOME IMPROVEMENT, and think about MR Wilson next door. TFL is the fence, where you can ask inteligent questions and get some inteligent answers... from friends who you dont see there faces.

Take TFL for what it is.
Feel free to make an email list for outside matters... Put my on that list too. ;)

You might laugh in the face of FEAR... but unless your armed, its a nervous, unconvincing, little laugh.

If someone can explain (by e-mail to me) how to permit ONE off-topic thread but not the next guy's (or a NEW guy's) off-topic thread, I may consider a change. Until then, giving any one of us "special dispensation" is unfair and discriminatory against the other 6500 or so members.
----

There's many ways to chat. I'm aware of ICQ and some AOL thing - and surely there are forums where anyone can say nearly anything.

TFL is a firearms-related forum. So, think "guns" and "Rights".

No offense meant. The "no OT" rule applies to me as well as to other folks. ;)
