model of Mossberg 12ga at Big 5??

Does anyone know what model the Mossberg 12ga is that is frequently on sale for $280, has black synthetic stock, comes with two barrels (one 28" vent rib and one 18 1/2") ?

I'm interested in this one as my first shotgun, but cannot research it since there is no model number listed in the Big 5 sporting goods ad.

Any additional info or feedback about the gun would be great also.
Thanks!

The one is a hunting barrel and the other is would be for HD. I think this is correct someone will be along to shed more light on it. The 18.5" barrel will be smooth bore.

I say thats one heck of a deal. I paid 321 out the door for my HD shotgun that is a 20" barrel. I got mine from Buds Gun Shop.

Good luck but I say buy it as thats a heck of a deal.

Yeah, I was thinking that having both the 18 1/2" and 28" barrels would make it a very versitile pump. I must say, I do like the look of the wood stock on the Bud's shop website that was linked above. Good price there also, especially for including the pistol grip (but I wouldn't expect to actually use it)

I also see that the wood version is 7 1/2 pounds...which I would assume is greater than the weight of the synthetic version, which would lessen the recoil. I'll have to look into that

I don't know how much extra weight is on the wood model... the stocks are not the densest of fine hardwood...;)
The PGO grip will net 25 bucks on most sites:eek:...

After looking at specs on Mossberg's site, looks like the weight is about the same between the wood and synthetic versions.

Can an tube extension be added to this model? It takes 4+1, I'd rather have at least 6+1 for "home use"

I can get the synthetic version locally without having to pay an extra transfer fee from a local dealer (if I bought online), so I think that's what I'll do.

Thanks for your input.

That is a mis-print... it is a 5+1... I can tell by the overhang length on the 18 which is the same as my 18 inch 5+1.

No, the 500 cannot have a mag extension... the barrel lug has a small hole for a bolt/screw rather than the large ring that goes over the mag tube and is secured with a cap nut like the 870/590 and others...

As for buying local, so long as their slightly higher price is not much more than buds/others plus the 25-30 bucks most ffl's get for transfer fee.

My local shop would rather do the transfer for me so I can get exactly what I want if their dist. network won't get it to them.

I would buy some ammo from them to give them some business even if it is a bunch higher price than walmart.

Get the gun you want to avoid future disappointment. If you buy plastic, Havlin sales... http://havlinsales.com/default.htm will likely have "take off" or "factory blem" from Mossberg... BTW... No matter what Mossberg you buy, Havlin's link needs to be in your bookmarks;)

Thanks Hotdogs, appreciate all the input and information. I'll think about this a little further before making a decision...good advice.

No prob... Love to share info I gleaned from personal experience;) It ain't worth nuttin' to me unless I give it away!:)

Uncle Ben, the actual model number may tell you very little -- it might not be found in the mfg's catalog. It's not unusual for a big box store to have special model number runs made just for them. Often, the stores are fine tuning the factory offerings to meet the requirements of their shoppers. Another reason is for price guarantees… they can honestly say that no one can beat their price on a certain model, because they have exclusive use of the number.

and the real post

I have a Mossberg 500A Field/Security Combo 12 GA with a 28" vent-rib barrel for hunting with screw in chokes and a 18.5" cylinderbore defense barrel, it's capacity is 5+1 using 2 3/4" shells, and it is capable of firing 3" magnums. Mossberg calls it a Model 54169, this picture is from their website www.mossberg.com :

It suits all of my needs, although I contemplate buying a 24" rifled barrel with ghost-ring sights... just because! The wood stocks are great and the stock buttpad is large, soft and helpful (according to my spartan jarhead sensibilities).

I bought mine used for $200 shortly after I left the corps... one selling point was that I had used practically the same shotgun (short barreled with a synthetic stock) when standing post at armories and checkpoints around the world. Good enough for USMC is good enough for me (but I prefer Berettas in .40 caliber).
