Model 700 bolt stop

The bolt on my Remington Model 700 slides all the way out when cycled. Isn't there supposed to be some sort of stop, and is this a common problem? I'd like to fix it myself if I can.

KJM,

There is a bolt stop, it is released/operated by the flat button on the inside top of the trigger guard. Sometimes too much oil, weak spring, burrs, etc., can cause the stop to stay in the release position. A bit of a jiggle on the release button can cure this, but sometimes you may need to push it down with a screwdriver or something. The bolt stop is at the rear of the action on the left side. A drop of oil on each side of the stop may help.

If you bought it used, it is possible that it is not there.

Let me know if this fixes it.

Take the action out of the stock. You can then see the bolt stop and observe it working. It is probably stuck in the down position, perhaps due to oil, grease, or rubbing on the stock. The spring may be broken or missing, also.

Be careful putting the action back in the stock, you can crack the stock on the ADL model if you let the magazine spring get caught under the magazine box.
