Model 70 Supergrade???

I am considering ordering a Model 70 Supergrade Winchester but am looking for anyone who owns and or has handled one of recent manufacture. I am wanting the "extras" of better wood and finish. Would I be wasting the considerable extra money fo rthe supergrade? I ordered one about 10 years ago but it was so poorly made, I refused to accept it. Have they improved??? Thanks for your replys!! A few months back, I did some feeling and fondling in a couple of gun stores, comparing various Winchesters with several other brands. I was favorably impressed with the supergrades I saw, over most all the others. Haven't owned nor shot one of current manufacture, however.

Well I can't say anything about a Super Grade Mod. 70, but I can say something about their customer service. It stinks! I have a Mod. 70 Featherweight that is so erratic it would make a stone cry. When I contacted Winchester, they said,"Take it to a gunsmith." They could not be bothered. I will not buy another new Winchester rifle again, and will probably retrict other purchases to finding a nice Pre-64 Mod. 94.

Paul, did you take it to a gunsmith? Personaly, I have never made a purchase of this type at a department store. If the guns I buy don't shoot very well, I take em back to the shop where I buy them. Ben has bedded the action in new rifles for me at no cost if tey needed it.If a new rifle shoots eraticly the first place I look is the recoil lug to see if it has full contact. Also tightening the action screws properly helps a lot. Front first-TIGHT-back next-Tight- center last-snug. If ya can't hit what your aiming at it's just a crowbar with a wooden handle. I love my supergrade in .270 it wears a 4.5x14 VX111 in Leu QR rings, and is begging for a back-up 1.5x5. Such a sweet rifle I feel obligated to give it what it wants. 1" groups all day with hunting loads (Barnes X and balistic tips). Filled a bonus tag at 375 yds last year. Calm day, known distance, bi-pod in prone position. beertrucker-x

I purchased a Win. M70 Super Grade in 7mm Rem. Mag. back in '93 for an antelpoe hunt in WY.
The fit and finish are no where near what the Pre '64 M70 Super Grade rifles were like but then what is?
I was disappointed that the receiver is high gloss blue instead of matte but...
Also, they deleted the black forend tip on the new SG.
The rifle did not want to shoot well with anything. The trigger was of the current trend PC, liability conscious version that took two men and a boy to let off.
I replaced the wood stock with an H-S Precision fiberglass/Kevlar one. No difference!
I sent the rifle down to Triple G Gunsmithing in TX for a glass bed and trigger job. It shoots much better now.
Winchester includes Millet rings and bases with the rifle. Garbage compared to a set of Leupold rings and bases.
If I were to do it all over again, I would get a M700 Remington African Safari from the Custom Shop.
