I have a model 70 Heavy Bbl Varmit in .308. Consistantly shoots 3/8" @100 yards.
Anyone else heard of this rifle being used as a LEO Sniper rifle?

In the days of the old Corps, Gen. Van Orden (ret.) used to sell modified M70s as snipers and worked to get them adopted by the Corp. The first non-military rifles used for sniping purposes by the Marines was indeed the Win. M70. They were later replaced by the Remington 700.

While the M70 can do the job, there is a whole line of developed products or proven techniques already engineered for the Remington. Also, the earlier crop of current M70s had some quality control problems with regards to the receiver and the recoil shield. We have an old thread (now locked) which discusses this.

Did you read the thread on the FN Police Rifle a bit lower on the board?

These are built on the Classic Winchester 70 actions... Or how about the Winchester 70 Sharpshooter series?

Or how about my ideal of the ultimate Winchester 70 Police Rifle-- A Winchester short action Classic in .308 with a 20-22" #4 contour match barrel preferably with a Warne Peep Base backup and iron post front sight with a parkerized finish all nessled in the HS Precision stock add the scope of your choice make sure it has plently of eye relief (read Leupold) to compensate for the far forward position of the rear scope mount holes...
