Model 70 issue

Just picked up what looks like an unfired Winchester Mod 70 xtr fwt in .30-06. Two issues I could use input on. The floor plate is bound up against the trigger guard and has to be pried open. Is this unusual? I removed the barrel from the stock to check for problems and cleaned it and could see no way to get it back together without it binding and figure it is just the typical lack of 'fine craftsmanship' for guns of that era. I have been working on my own guns for 45 yrs so am not a beginner. The floorplate does not bind up on the latch button, but when seating into the shoulder in the trigger guard once it is latched. You have to whack it to get it to seat all the way down. Seems I could easily relieve some metal from and repaint the guard to fix it.

Second: The claw extractor must have a sharp edge on the bottom of the leading edge as it's gouging each case base pretty good. I need to know how to get that claw out so I can fix that. I know how to take the old mauser bolts apart but this type is new to me.

Maybe I shoulda bought my grandfathers gorgeous Sauer .30-06 Mauser from my little brother instead...

To fit the floorplate, you remove wood from the stock (either behind the trigger guard or in front of the hinge tab), not metal from the floorplate. It probably just needs the action screws loosened and the metal parts repositioned.

The XTR has a push feed action and a sliding extractor, not a claw extractor. If the extractor is notching the cartridge rims, put a drop of oil in the little hole on the front of the extractor or on the edge of the extractor. If you decide to remove the extractor, be sure to do it where the little captive ball and spring can be caught or found if it launches.

Thanks Scorch.

I had the barrel out of the stock to try the repositioning thing. Didn't work at all. It's pretty bound up. Hard to imagine something like that making it past a final inspector... if there is such a thing.

I did figure out how to remove the sliding extractor. There is a burr on the bottom of the leading edge as I figured. It was gouging cases pretty good. That's an easy fix.

Problem is actually with the spring loaded ejector rod coming out of the bolt face. I polished the end of it to a mirror finish but it still gouges the edge of the case rim. Never seen this before. Is this something anyone else has seen? It needs a strong spring there but this one seems too stiff or it wouldnt' do that.
