Who/where could I get some iron sights put on my Model 70 All-weather Stainless? It is a great gun but I would like to put some back-up irons on it. Nothing complex, just some regular rifle sights.
Talk to your gunsmith. You'll need to pick out the sights you want. There are literally hundreds of choices from places like Midway and Brownells. After you get the sights a smith will drill and tap holes in the barrel to attach them.
It isn't as expensive as you think. Total cost even after paying the gunsmith can be under $200 depending on the quality of the sights you choose. It can be a lot more if you get expensive sights.
My advice, put that extra $200-$300 into a better scope and mounts. I've never had a quality scope let me down. I have had iron sights fail. A quality scope does everything better anyway.
I have always liked the remington factory sights. I bet your local GS has a box full of them from people bringing in their rifles to have a scope installed and telling the GS to remove the factory sights and plug the holes.
I bet you could get a set of these installed for a fair price. Plus you can find them on ebay and gunbroker and just pay for the installation.
You could also send your rifle to williams gunsights and they will install the sights they make. New England Custom Gun is another option.
I am like you and like back up open sights on my rifles. I just bought a ruger model 77MKII on GB to replace the same rifle I stupidly sold to a "friend" several years ago. When I bought the first rifle I ordered the factory open sights for the rifle. I never had then installed but did fit the front sight barrel band. When I sold the gun I kept the open sights.
Now have the front sight fitted and instead of drilling the barrel for the rear sight I found on ebay a New England Custom Gun rear receiver sight that fits the ruger scope ring mount that cost me $45 including shipping. That sight sells for around $90-100 so this was deal for me. Plus once sighted in you can remove and replace it and it will be zeroed. It has a thumb screw release.
I am certain that NECG makes the open sights that ruger installs on their open sighted rifles.
The problem with adding sights is the stocks aren't designed for them. Usually you wind up wih sights so tall that it ruins the aesthetics of the rifle. If you want sights you should change the stock as well to something with more drop at the heel.
Taylorce1 made a really good point. I looked at a savage hog hunter and the comb is made for scope use and the open sights on the rifle are really tall and look a little strange.
I also owned a savage 223 that came with open sights and with the factory stock the sights could be seen and the comb was still high enough for scope use. I hated the flimsy plastic stock it came with so ordered a boyds laminated stock. The comb was so high that you couldn't get your face down low enough to use the open sights anymore.
