I don't know how often these Mis-stamps occur. My revolver is clearly a pre lock
Model 66 357 magnum. However, the frame is stamped "MOD. 63-3" which would indicate a 22lr. Serial number is BJC 0831. Does anyone know what year is was manufactured? Thanks, BJ

I have a Model 15 with a different
Serial Number Prefix in the yoke
area than on the butt. It was sold
using the butt number.

On Smith revolvers, the official serial number is on the bottom of the butt.
This may have changed on recent guns, but I haven't bought a brand new S&W for over 10years.

Misstamps aren't common, but they're not rare, either.

There are some collectors who focus on the misstamps. They generally command a small premium.

I agree with Mike, but the M66 is a K-Frame and the M63 is a J-Frame. That strikes me as odder than usual.
