Model 64 -- Price?

Hi - Went to the local gun store yesterday and saw a pile of S&W Model 64 .38 Specials. They are 4" , fixed sight, stainless. I can get one for $250. Is this a good price? Anyone own a Model 64 ? Any info or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, if they were in a pile, or at least look as though they were, I'd pass. More like $200 or less might me start weeding through the stack.;)

Depending on condition, $250 is not at all an unreasonable price for a 64. Take your time to look them all over and select the one in the best condition of the group.

Pile of S&W revolver's?

Naw, if the owner's didn't think any more of a S&W revolver
than to pile them up; please leave me out of the bidding.:(
Now, if that's just a little terminology used to descibe lot's of S&W
used revolver's; then $250 ain't such a bad price.:)

OK -- poor choice of words. What I meant to say is the gun shop has 10 neatly displayed Model 64 revolvers . They were formerly owned by the State Prison and have identical Pachmeyer grips. I've never owned a Smith ; my experience is limited to Rugers and T/C. I've read a lot about Smith triggers, etc. Is the 64 a good gun ? The price seems reasonable.

The Model 64 is a good gun.
I would go back to the gunshop and use Jim March's checklist http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57816 to inspect a few of them, and then buy the best one.

My friend bought one of the police trade-in M64's more than five years ago for less than $200, but that was before S&W started screwing with the new ones.
In my opinion, these older ones are better than the new ones.
I think $250 would be a good price as long as the gun is mechanically sound and looks decent.
