Model 60 question...

Hello all,

I just bought a used M60 Cheif's Special .38.
I'm interested in finding out how old the gun is, and if it's safe to shoot +P or not.

It's a 60-7
Serial #BNS1XXX

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Model 60 Central. I think anything after -4 on the 60 is ggod to go. 'Better get some adult supervision on this one though

Adult supervision has arrived! Seriously, I asked the factory a few years ago, and, indeed, anything from M60-4 on is okay with Plus P. In fact, my three-inch M60 is a M60-4, the full-lugged bbl. and Target sights. Great little trail gun if no large animals are a threat.

I also have an M60-7. It shoots like a target gun with Speer Gold Dot 125 grain bullets, which are very hot for a .38, but they're a tight fit in the chambers.

I think the M60's are one of the best, most practical carry guns ever, when one doesn't need more power.

I have a mod 60-4 that handles +p very well. but I shoot my own handloads most of the time. 158gr LSWC over 3.6 gr bullseye. I hope to finish up with the bullseye soon because it is to dirty. I might go with 231 or 2400...

The original

Smith & Wesson model 60 in .38 Special (Chief's Special)
with 2" barrel, had a serial number that started out with
an "R" prefix. This would date back to the mid 60's; as the
model 60 was first introduced in 1965. :) :D
