Model 60... how old, +P OK?

Yesterday at the Tanner show in Denver, I found a very nice little
used revolver for my wife. It's exactly what she wants to use as
a carry weapon. It's stainless w/ a matte finish and Uncle Mike's
rubber grips. Very tight lock-up, nice bright bore and we're
both glad we found it. Anyway, I'd like to know the year
of manufacture, and if it's ok to feed it +P occasionally. We
plan on lots of practice with tame loads,
& hotter rounds for occational practice & carry duty.

Serial # R3038xx, .38 Special
Also, stamped on the left side of the frame under the cylinder
is BPD212SD. I'm not very familiar w/ S&W revolvers, any info
on this number? Thanks to all, and safe shooting

Looks to be sometime in 1982.

A limited diet of +P won't kill the gun, but it will age faster.

I don't know what the other number is. Could be a police dept. serial number.

Thanks, Mike

I appreciate the info. Life is good! I found a nice
little gun, & now my wife has another reason to come
shooting with me.

It would be like running your car on the interstate at 110 mph. It won't destroy it, right away.

Why the J frame? Is she a shooter? How about a M10 or something beefier like a Ruger Service Six?

Yes, she started shooting with me about 2 years back. I travel
quite a bit for work, and I feel much better knowing that she
can watch over the kids & herself when I'm away. She has a
Kahr K40 that she shoots quite well, but she still has a little
trouble racking the slide sometimes. For home defense, that's
not a problem, it stays in a quick-access lockbox by the bed, fully loaded.
But, out of the blue, she told me that she wants to
go thru the concealed carry permit process with me
So I instantly said "sure - which gun?" She had obviously
thought about it, because she stated her desire for a revolver,
said she felt it would be simpler to use under pressure & that she
wouldn't worry about having trouble clearing a jam. She also had
shot my dad's S&W 640 J-frame several times & said that's what
she wanted. I sure couldn't argue with any of that, so I told her
that I'd start looking for a nice used one, I still can't bring myself
to buy new from S&W. So that's why we bought a used J-frame,
and we'll only shoot hotter loads occasionally to make sure she's
not surprised by the kick if she needs it in a crisis.

Thanks again to all, Ron
