model 58

I recently picked up a model 58 (N1148xx). When I was comparing it to another (newer) 58, I noticed that the one I just picked up has the back of the cylinder (by the recoil shield) beveled. Was this normal for cylinders in this time period, or was this modified after leaving the factory?

Cylinder play seems to be ok, but could probably be better. I'm hesitant to take it to a local smith since I'm not sure what kind of work they do (esp after seeing Oleg's post). Does anyone know of a decent smith (for an N-frame) in the NH seacoast area?

And on the topic of smithing, does anyone have the ISBN for Kuhnhausen's book? I'd like to see if I can get the local bookstore to order it.

Tamara,

I just took a look at a couple of older revolvers I have. My 18-2 and 57 are the same way. The other 58 I was comparing it to was a much later serial number.

Still looking for a smith though.

Thanks George. I checked amazon and they a couple of his books, but not this one. At least I couldn't find it.
