Model 57

i saw a 4" model 57 at the gunshow today.

it had a ported barrel.

the guy said it was factory porting and s&w did it to a lot of their big bores.

anyone have any info on this?

how old is the gun? S & W ported some 44 magnums but I never heard of a 41 mag being ported. I'm not sure why as I have a 4 inch M-57 made in 1987 and it doesn't have enough recoil to warrant it. I'm not sure I could tell the difference. I have shot both ported and unported 444 TC Contenders side by side and I couldn't tell the difference between them(they both kicked a LOT).
recoil is subjective to each person.

A model 57? Not a 57-1 or -2 etc? The 57 was made until 1982 and none were ported. If it's a later model I can't help you as I lost interest in S&Ws at that time.

I don't think no M57 (no dash, -1, -2, -3) were ever factory ported. The ss model, the M657, have been factory ported. Factory porting was only done to very few big bore models.

so what are the chances that this is a factory ported gun? i suppose good, since who in their right mind would ruin a barrel by drilling holes in it?

i myself don't like ported guns, so i would not purchase this one.

i ask because the guy at the gunshow acted like everyone (except me) knows about ported model 57s.

I had two in the late 1970s and never saw or heard of any ported at the time. In fact porting handguns, although not new, was pretty uncommon at the time as I remember.

As a die hard .41 Mag fan I don't remember ever hearing of a factory ported Model 57. We're talking the blued carbon steel model, not stainless, right?
Doesn't mean S&W never did it, but I think it more likely on a stainless 657 than the older blued models.

As to "drilling holes in perfectly good barrels" ... when properly done, those "holes" do not impact accuracy and the venting of gasses can reduce recoil significantly. Magnaport probably has the best reputation in the business and a well deserved one at that.

ya, this was a blued, 4" model 57. didn't think to inquire about any -1, -2. since i had never heard of a factory ported 57 i thought someone may have done it aftermarket.

nothing against porting, in general, i just don't like it myself. not good on a pistol that may be shot indoors at night, IMO.

i had one of those taurus titanium jobs in .41 mag, with factory porting. man that guy had serious muzzle blast!

i was recommended to Magnaport my ruger 77 .308 to reduce recoil. i just shot it a bunch and got used to it.

The only ported .41 magnums from S&W that I am aware of are the stainless 657's from the custom shop. Porting is a long oval perpendicular to the bore and in front of the sight. If it had two longitudonal ports on either side of the muzzle, It was most likely Magna-Ported! ;)
