Model 57 loads, to hot or not

Been loading some 41 mag for my S&W 57, 19.5 grains of H110 topped with a 210 gr. jsp. Are these ok for a steady diet through the smith?

I don't think so. I load them a bit hotter than that, and have had no problem with my Mdl. 57.

Just my opinion. J.B.

See more of a problem with the type of powder than the load. Flake is more gun friendly than ball and H110 is ball powder.

That yields about 1100fps, should be a nice comfortable load to shoot. How is the muzzle flash and does it burn clean?

My Model 657 loads

I am tired of abusing S&W revolvers!!!
My standard loads are...
With either a 210 or 220 grain bullet:
17.5 Grains of 2400
9.4 Grains of UNIQUE
8.0 Grains of UNIQUE..Old Police Load
7.0 Grains of UNIQUE
5.0 Grains of UNIQUE..Good PPC Load [Very Controlable]

Both my blackhawk and my 657 digest a steady diet of 20.5 H110 + XTP 41000 210 gr.+ CCI 350 mag primers.
No ill effects were noted, and both shoot as good as the day they were new.
I'm guessing this load would yield around 1200+ with my 4 3/4" blackhawk, and around 1300+ for my 7 1/2 657.
The load I used before was about the same; 17.6 2400+ XTP 41000 210gr. + CCI 350 mag primers.
Used that load for a while, too.
Was good for about 1200+ FPS from my 4 3/4.
Both loads are good for a lightshow from the shorter barrel.
Your load should be around 1100-1200 unless your gun is really tight.
If in doubt, stick with the load you're using. It's fine.

Your load is reasonable and safe in the S&W. Anybody who thinks this load "abuses" the S&W doesn't know what they're talking about! It is certainly not as hot as factory loads in my opinion.

Back when God was a Boy

and you could compete with a real revolver in IMSHA, I used a Model 57 loaded with a H&G 225 gr bullet, cast of lin-o-type, over 21 gr of 296, for circa 1,300 fps. Have shot thousands since with in a 657 Classic Hunter with no ill effect.

Please remember, a 57/657 is a stronger gun than is a 29/629. After all, less metal is removed from the same diameter cylinder to make the chambers. And less metal is removed from the barrel also.
