Model 19 range report

While everyone at home slept in this AM, I took the S&W Model 19 that I purchased earlier in the week to the range. Upon arrival, I had their in house smith have a look at it. I had already done the tests recommended in Jim March's fine post. Everything looked good to me, but I wanted a smith to check for any battery issues. After a thorough once over, the smith pronounced the weapon fit for duty. He also pointed out that the barrel was pinned and the cylinder recessed and pointed out these details on the pistol. He went on to say 'they don't make 'em like that no more.'

On to the range with a box of 50 138 gr. fmj WWB and a suitable target. Placing the target at the 7-8 yard range I commenced to working. The trigger pull in DA was silky smooth. Once I understood the rhythm of the gun, I could anticipate the hammer drop. Trigger pull in SA was very light and crisp, so much so that I popped a flyer or two because of it...must remember the four rules. The sights were unlike any handgun I had ever fired, large and bright which made for easy target acquisition and quick follow up shots. Felt recoil was somewhat sharp but buffered by the balance of the piece, the load I was firing and the weapon's Pachmayr grips. I did not start out to shoot for accurate grouping as this was more of a shakedown cruise. After 50 rounds, though, there were enough holes in groups of 5 or 6 in very close proximity to one another in the vital areas of a human sized silhouette target to make a very favorable impression on me as to this weapon's accuracy.

I think I've found 'the one'. Having always shot semi-auto, it's a relief to not have to worry about magazines that don't fit, failure to load, fire or eject,
stove pipe rounds, etc.

Some questions...

When did S&W stop the pinning and recessing of barrels and cylinders?
Is it possible to tell the age of this pistol?
What's the best home/self defense load for this pistol in both .38special and .357 magnun?
What are the best speed loaders for this weapon and how much can I expect to pay for them?

Thanks, everybody!

1982

Is it possible to tell the age of this pistol?

Yup. Let us know the serial number. (Replace the last couple digits with "x's")

What's the best home/self defense load for this pistol in both .38special and .357 magnun?

I like 158gr LSWC-HP +P's in .38 and Gold Dot or Golden Saber 125's in .357 Mag. Someone will be along shortly to tell you different; this is an internet gun board, after all. ;)

What are the best speed loaders for this weapon and how much can I expect to pay for them?

I like HKS loaders. They're cheap (under $10), hold onto the cartridges well, and are compact.

Thanks Ms. Tamara,

I'm assuming that the serial number is found just below the recess where the ejector rod goes. If so, the number
is K9474xx.

Thank you, again...

A Viet Nam era piece! I'm so stoked. I picked the weapon up at the local gunny...$320 out the door. The finish is almost 100% with the slightest holster wear on the cylinder and the muzzle. I'm thinkin' little old lady who only drove it to church on Sundays or local/state trooper who was office bound. It sure has been taken good care of.

Sounds like you stumbled on to the finest revolver ever chambered in 357 Magnum, in my opinion anyway. No other 357 balances or points as well for me, and frankly the rest of them are just too big for the cartridge. I have well over 20K rounds through my 'beater' M19 and all is well, it is just a few years newer than yours. It is starting to loosen up a tiny bit but it is as smooth as glass, probably take another 10-15K before it needs to see a Dr for a freshening up.

Keep pounding the targets DA, your overall handgunning skills will improve dramatically. No matter what you pick up and fire you will be able to hit with it once you have honed your DA wheelgun work.

I agree on the HKS speedloaders for carry, they are what I use. For games the Safariland II and III are faster though.

I load my M19 with homebrewed 125 JHP full tilt magnum ammunition, that are a good bit stouter than anything you are going to buy off the shelf. I am not recoil sensitive though, and in the K-frames they are definately not for everyone. The blast is also incredible, but deafness beats deadness IMO if I needed to shoot it in a hallway or something. Most shooters decline a second cylinder of the load I keep if I offer it for them to shoot. If I leave it for my wife or daughter I load it with a 125 JHP 38 special load, running about 950 FPS which would be a mild/mid 38 +p load. It is the same load that is kept in all the 38's around here. I would suggest you get a good 125 JHP 38 +P load to start out with until you become quite confortable with the magnum ammunition in it, then I would stay with the 125 weight in the magnums also.

:D I like the Model 19 a bunch.

You are now offically "spoilt". Careful - other older smith's tend to follow one home after an experience like this. One's eyes start to glaze, ogle, and dart to the used handgun showcases. It is okay - it is normal. :)

I agree with Tamara's choice of HD loads - 158gr LSWC-HP +P's in .38 ,
If you don't reload Black Hills Gold IIRC makes a great load in the blue box [remanufactured btw] I also agree with her choice of speedloaders.

Have fun, be safe and stay with the fundamentals. Then work your way up to the full tilt boogie loads HSMITH speaks of to see if they are for you. H is right that DA will improve trigger control and sight mgmt. for other guns as well.

[uh-oh...I just agreed on more than point with more than one person in the same post...on the same gun board...is the sky gonna fall or something ? :p ]

I miss the 19. If I can't find a good deal on one I guess a 66 is in my future. Kicking myself for the one I let get away years ago (who woulda thunk it would be discontinued :( ).

And Jbar4Ranch, what did ya get banned for? I don't remember your posts being that controversial.

Nice gun. Nice review -- my 66-1 is nudging me, hinting that it's been a little neglected lately!

Take a look at the Safariland Comp I loaders. I used to use HKS, but like the simplicity and compactness of the Comp I better. (YMMV -- buy one of them and one of the HKS, they're all cheap.)

Coffee, I talked "poorly" about a woman I was married to a few years ago in a recent thread by Thaddeus. She was apparently still stalking me there and threatened Eric with legal action over it. In all fairness, I talked "poorly" about her a year or two back and was warned by Patricia not to do it. Oh well.

In a related gun... anyone try the 66 with the 3" barrel, high-viz front sight, and ashley "V" notch rear? Looks like a sweet gun but I bet holsters are a pain to find!

Oh, and Jbar4Ranch, 10-4 on that. I'm on #3 myself. Time for a new user name ;) .

Yes, it's Mrs. Runner's favorite. I think it's actually a 3.2" barrel. Very sweet shooting, I was thinking of it as I read this post.

66-5 CEL78xx (Tamara, when was this one manufactured?)

To someone raised on 1911's and S&W wheelguns there's nothin' like a good K frame. I only have two,a 15 and an 18,but i'm looking for a 4" 19 and a 2 1/2" 66. Great guns. Enjoy.

I own a Colt Python that doesn't even come close to being as smooth and easy to shoot as my used Model 19-5. The trigger on the 19 is SMOOTH, and it doesn't stack. It's what ALL revolver makers should strive for, if they gave a damn true quality. Since acquiring my 19, the Python has become a second-class citizen.

GBurner: what's your barrel length on that sweet critter?

In my opinion, it makes a bit of a difference in terms of ammo selection.
