Hi folks---I'm new here to the board. I recently picked up a norinco 1897 clone, sn400xxx, decent wood, seems solid. I want to polish the internals to smooth it the action a bit, was wondering if anyone can point me towards disassembly instructions for this piece? Thanks, Geodan

Geodan,
That link will be useful, but it makes the process seem much harder than it is.
If you want to polish, then do so, but there is a more fun way.
Clean it well, lube it very lightly or not at all, then shoot the heck out of it.
In a very short time, it will start to smooth itself.
Clean and lube and the job is done.
I can't personally vouch for this, but I have been told that one can use a whitening toothpaste to accelerate the smoothing process. Makes sense, since this is a mild abrasive. Just seems strange to me.
Have fun with your Norinco. Mine is a dandy.

I've used Flitz metal polish. I turned a Rem Express 12 ga. into a slick-shucking machine one day while I was sitting on the sofa watching movies and enduring a bad case of the flu. It only took about 1500+ pumps. I changed the Flitz after every 400 or 500.

It was the cold medicine that made me do it. Cold meds and boredom.

Hi DB and Johnbt---I've already been working the action in while sitting around, and I notice that it seems to be smoothing itself out already. Since it's warming up here on the east coast I'm going to head to the store and pick up whatever economy 12 ga shells are available in bulk and crank some rounds through her.

I already did a disassembly and cleaning out of axlegrease just to satisfy my curiosity about the mechanism. If this gun proves to be reliable, as I expect it to, I will probably do some polishing to remove tool marks and bevel the frame at the approaches to the chamber (these were left pretty square, and I can see a little shaved plastic from test cycling some rounds). Then into the park-tank, and I'll drill/tap the receiver and barrel for a ST ghost ring sight install. I love those sights! This will become my bastard truck gun.

I love the look of the 97, and that it is a Browning (all pause here for a moment of remembrance/appreciation for the master) design. Other positives in my mind are the all-steel construction and the fact that the barrel threads into the receiver, instead of being pushed into place. I've seen a number of 870's and mossy 500's that have slop between the barrel extension and receiver, this seems worst w/ the mossy's and their aluminum frames, though this doesn't seem to stop them from running. I also like the 97's locking system, with an angled block that rises against the back of the bolt and self-adjusts for wear. Looks very sturdy compared to a mossy or remington locking block.

Down sides thus far--1-It's chicom, but if I'm going to put money in their pockets I'd prefer it be for a gun (I used to think we were the only country silly enough to sell arms to our enemies). 2-sharp rear edges on bolt, if you don't watch hand position it will definitely eat some flesh. 3-fit is pretty good but finish is lacking. Well, at this price point, I guess I can expect that. Besides, gives me a project for the winter months. Will return and post a few pics when I'm done. Better to work this thing over with my additions than cut and paste on a real one, IMHO. Thanks to both of you for your replies---Geodan
