Model 13-4 my new carry piece

I purchased a never fired mint condition 3" model 13-4 and it came into my FFL and I picked it up yesterday. I have purchased several nice S&W revolvers and quickly sold them because they were "too nice to carry". When this opportunity came up I jumped and decided this would be my carry piece. When the gun came it its obvious its never been fired and rarely had the cylinder been cycled. I was tempted to quickly relist it for sale and make a fair profit. I knew the best thing for me to do was to quickly shoot it. I tried to view it as liberating it rather than violating it. I quickly went to the range with the only ammo I had available which was a box of wwb 130 gr fmj. at 7-10 yards all rounds printed a few inches low. I had two cylinders of 158 LSWCHP and it put them dead aim. I know this gun is the one. I knew the first time I pulled the trigger I had devalued it but I also realized it was worth it. I also have a 4" model 13-1 which shoots the same but the inch of barrel makes more of a difference in carry than I thought.
Ok my questions are about what year was this gun made s/n BKP9202 and if I am going to carry a beautiful blued K frame in South Ga heat and humidity what do I do to protect the finish? I didnt know if I should apply a few good coats of a car wax or if I should just wipe down with Rem oil a few times a week.

It would have shipped in early 1993.

As far as the finish, bluing isn't as fragile as some say. If it's a carry gun, just wipe it down at the end of the day.

Blueing is, as has been pointed out, is not fragile as many believe. I live in Memphis, summer time temp. runs about 100 degrees, humidity around 80~90% at times.

I oil down my guns with a 50/50 mix of automotive oil and Three-In-One machine oil. I oil them heavily after cleaning, then wipe them down with a Scott Shop towel to remove excess. I've experienced no problems in forty years or so.

I guess I just looked at them as safe queens and I knew that there was no way I could keep them that way. Dont worry I learned my lesson and look forward to applying holster wear to this new 13.

Congratulations on your 13. It's one of the best carry guns S&W ever made. As has been noted above. Keep it clean and lightly oiled and it will last for a very long time.

What holsters are you considering and what would others recommend? I've got a JIT slide for my Model 13, but it sags so far out to the side that it might as well be a paddle holster.

I am going to carry it in a Smartcarry and also a Side Guard Holsters Hammar. I originally purchased the Hammar for my 4" but after talking with Erik we decided I could just cut it down and its perfect. Of course that doesnt mean Im not still on the search.

To protect the finish on your M-13. Start with a clean revolver then apply two(2) THIN coats of Johnson' let haze up and buff off with a clean cotton rag, apply a second coat as needed.
