Model 12 pump action rimfire rifle

I am wanting to know what I have. What does a 22 rem. special mean? Does this take different shells than a regular model 12? The serial number on the gun is 297461. I shot a 22 long rifle shell through this gun and it split the casing. Any information on this would be helpful.
 
Your model 12c special is NOT a 22 long rifle. The cartridge this gun is chambered for is the 22 Remington special aka 22 Winchester Rim Fire. Not the 22 magnum. This is a very old cartridge that fortunately is still being produced. Price is @ $8 per box.

I did some digging and found some info. I purchased 22 winchester reimfire 45 grain hollow point from cci. Would these be the right shells for this gun. Thanks
 
I believe CCI is the only one making .22 Winchester Rim Fire at the present time. So If they are labeled .22 WRF you should be good to go. Remember Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR) is the wrong shells. It do get confusing , don't it:D
