Model 12 LRP 6.5cm going back to Savage

I just picked up my savage model 12 lrp in 6.5cm yesterday and completed the initial 50 round break in (shoot 1 clean x 10/shoot 3 clean x 5/shoot 5 clean x 5). I noticed specifically with the hornady 120 amax that it was very hard to chamber the load. The 140's were much better but not how I thought it should be. After not being able to chamber a few loads, I found it nearly impossible to retract the bolt. When I finally was able to eject the unfired rounds they had striations around the entire bullet. After I left the range today I called Savage and the warranty rep immediately said that it sounds like I have a short chamber. He wasn't surprised that the 140's had an issue but he was shocked that the 120's were having issues also. He immediately made arrangement for UPS to pick it up and estimated a 3 week turnaround. The service was great but it is a little disappointing that I have to be without my new rifle. If it's corrected I will be extremely happy with it as I love the set up.

I've heard about other's with lrp's having "tight" chambers but not ones that were cut way too short. Anyone have a similar experience?

I heard there was a run of them that were cut with short chambers, sounds like yours is one of them. Savage will make it right and you will be shooting tiny groups in no time...

That's good to hear. I got a good feeling from talking to the rep. Not once did he ask what I had done or fight me about what I was seeing.

Yeah, they have tight chambers. That is one reason they shoot so well. Sounds to me that a short throat and not a tight chamber is the problem here.

Well I got my rifle back from Savage exactly one month after I sent it off. They said it wasn't a short chamber but that it was tight and needed to be polished. I took it out earlier this week and was getting disappointing 1" groups with factory Hornady 140gr amax. I didn't worry too much because I heard they changed powder and basically it's way different than the original. I just got back from the range after doing a ladder test of 38-42.5gr of h4350 w/ 140 amax loaded .002" from the lands. The results were much better. 41.5gr was the winner. My 5 shot 100 yard group measured in at just under .25" center to center! I'm excited because this is by far the most accurate gun I've had.

Savages generally have good accuracy right out of the box.

Anything can happen, even with the best production, Savage will make it right, I know this is a disappointment, I have felt this pain with two Rem 700's

Only I had to fight like the devil to get repairs and the warranty
observed, but even those bums made it right eventually, though I really had to lay it on them hard.

Don't give them an inch. Savage will get it right in the end. You can't bend and you have to tell them they are going to make it right or you will go to BBB, Chamber of Commerce, or the media, if that is what it takes to make them honor their warranty. They will eventually fix your problem.

It takes a long time and I've heard horror stories but I've sent two Remington 700 to Quebec canada and they both came back winners I might of been a lucky one

OP and others (who might be old and movie fans)

There is a scene in the movie "Casablanca" with the Claud Rains character is closing down a casino while saying "I am SHOCKED to learn there is gambling going on here" as he is given his winnings by the casino for his evening's winnings.

Same issue with a F/TR in .223 in 79-80 grain bullets.

Mine is going back when it warms up a bit here. Shipping label promised.

Sorry to hear that, it sucks to get a new toy and have to send it back right away. I hope your end result is as good as mine. And fyi I also asked them to clean up the end of the barrel. It wasn't chamfered from the factory. It came back properly chamfered and clean.

it just plain old bites that a short chamber happens. but thank God it was from savage. could have been alot worse, like remlins.

I'm very partial to Savages--but being a reloader is a big reason--they simply seem to require that you find their sweet spot. As you can see from your experience--once you find her sweet spot you'll get some good love. : )
