Model 10 Range Report

Finally took my new (to me anyway) Smith model 10 police trade in out to the range today. I put 100 rounds of remington umc 130 gr FMJ thru it. Every round hit pretty much exactly where i pointed it. I didnt actually measure the groups but I'd guess they were around 2-3" at 20 yards. I'm very happy with the gun. Since it was a police trade in, it had alot of holster wear on the barrel, front of the cylinder, topstrap, and backstrap. I used some old Van's Instant Gun Blue and now it looks almost new. Once I get some Ahrends grips for it, I think it will be perfect. I've been bitten by the revolver bug, already have 4 more on the list! :D

Revolvers can become habit forming, especially when you realize they are not dependent on magazines and keep all your brass for reloading.

Revolvers are outnumbered about 2:1 by semi autos at the range I frequent. An interesting observation is that very few semi auto shooters visit each other and talk about their pistols.

Revolver shooters are a different story. They seem to be more interested in what their fellow revolver owners are shooting. Discussions concerning reloading, accuracy, modifications, historical value, and other points are common.

What I am taking a relatively long time in saying is "welcome to the club." My S&W 10 is a pleasure to shoot. I stay with a middle of the road loading with 158 grain SWC hardcast because of reloading ease and it knocks down steel plates at 25 yards with boring consistency.

Long story short , everybody needs 1 38spc. revolver & the 10 is it !!!

It's America's Handgun,,,

Smith & Wesson M&P,,,
Originally sold in 1898,,,
It's now known as the Model 10.

K-frame in .38 Special,,,
I believe it's 104 years of continuous production (in many calibers and versions) give it some historical significance.

It's what I call America's Handgun.

I work at a university and am often taking young men and women to the range,,,
In most cases they want to shoot modern hi-cap semi-auto pistols,,,
I allow that for fun but when it gets to serious training,,,
I often start them out with a S&W Model 10.

That's after a lot of inexpensive .22 rimfire,,,
Just to get them used to shooting a gun.

I encourage them to buy a used one for themselves,,,
There are plenty of sources for them and they go for cheap,,,
I tell them this gun will last forever and will take care of most problems.

If they want to buy a Wonder-Nine or any other new gun later on,,,
The Model 10 will still serve them well as a bedroom gun,,,
Or just a second gun for when they teach their friends.

Right now budsgunshop.com has used police trade-ins of this model for $269.00,,,
Heck my friends, at that price, buy a pair and box em up like dueling pistols.

It's certainly not the most glamorous handgun out there,,,
But in the hands of our police forces and honest American citizens,,,
It's been very effective for a long long time at putting bad guys 6 feet underground.

I have the adjustable sighted brother, the m15 and God i love the k framed .38s. Just so freaking nice to shoot. I want to get some of those police guns, but i have to say they likely wont stay DAO very long.

I really need to buy one of those police trade ins.

Aarond, do you frequent the Armory? I work in Stillwater and shoot at the Armory every now and then.
