Model 10 Hammer movement?

Bentonville

I Just got a Model 10. The hammer sort or wiggles to the left a fraction of an inch and then straightens up as it moves off the sear and travels back as the trigger is pulled all the way back. ( I think that's the thingie that pushes the hammer back? ) and then it straightens up as it prepares to drop free. WHen it does drop, the firing pin goes right through the firing pin hole. There is a tiny , tiny bit of scurring on the bottom of the hammer shaft on the left, only a tiny bit. Is this movement on the way back normal or should I have a gunsmith replace the sear or something? The gun was a police carry and mechanically all things seem crisp. It was made in 71-72. Thanks for any help.

I took it to a gunsmith today and he discovered the hole in the hammer was slightly large. He replaced the hammer. The only difference in the two hammers is the new one, not really new but used, has a spring loaded nose that keeps it down for supposedly greater reliability. Did I do a good thing? The original hammer was wobbling and binding just slightly when raising? Thanks for your help.

It's usually considered a good idea to keep hammers and triggers together as a matched set (which your gunsmith may have done). Either way, as long as the function isn't impaired, you probably made out OK.

Does the action seem to be as smooth as you think it should be in both single and double action? When the hammer is cocked manually, can you push the hammer and cause it to fall without pulling the trigger? That's a very important test. If the hammer falls from pushing it with your thumb, it needs to be corrected for the sake of safety.
