want to get some new grips for my new-to-me smith and wesson model 10. i really like the ahrends retro combat grip in cocobolo, but is there any other companies I should look into? want to stick with wood grips instead of a hogue monogrip-type rubber grip.

One of the best looking grips for a S&W revolver, IMHO, is the factory Magna stock with a Tyler T-Grip adapter. This combo, unfortunately, isn't going to dampen recoil much, but then again the recoil of a .38 Special from an all-steel K-Frame isn't that harsh in the first place.

+1!! You get a more comfortable grip and keep the classic look--it's also much less expensive than custom grips!

S&W has had some nicer factory grips that are more ergonomically correct than service or target grips; the FGC.

Otherwise, Nill makes some nice grips for K frame RB.

+1 - I've tried all sorts of grips on K-Frames and have come around to this set-up as well.

For my dedicated 6" target revolvers I like the Herretts shooting star, but for practical purposes it's hard to beat a T-Grip.

I put a set of black rubber Pachmyers on my 10-9 for greater shooting comfort, until I can get a T-grip, but they are uuugly!!

Well, if the combo fits you hand like a glove, it is likely the felt recoil will be low. The T Grips and Service stocks actually feel pretty good to me (round butt or square). Even .357 Magnums in my round butt 2.5" Model 66 or 3" 13 aren't too big of a deal. But that's just me.

But Ahrends stocks feel a bit better still to me, though the service magnas and T-grip combo is a tad easier to conceal. I prefer the Ahrends Tactical stocks with the squared front edge and no finger grooves:

Those Ahrends grips are niiice!

Me like!

I'd like them to expose the bottom strap (where the s/n is), but that's just me...my hands don't need the extra wood.

I have a bunch of k-frames and that's my favorite set-up, too. I find they even help give better control when shooting 357 loads.

BTW, Tyler is back in production and shipping quickly on in-stock items. Just ordered a few T-Grips last month and they were delivered about 10 days later.
