OK I have a Colt "ACE" 22 lr, SN# SM 259XXXX , it has been shot about 200 rounds, and is in Excellent Condition. I have the box and all original paper work. My dad bought this pistol years ago. I was wondering what year it was produced , and what it's worth.
Thanks in Advance,
Floyd

Did you try Colt's own serial lookup?
Post-war, Aces were made circa 1978-1982.
In truly excellent condition, with the box and papers, $2000, maybe a bit more.
They show up on gunbroker with starting bids of $2500-$3500, but I don't see those guns getting many bids.

Thanks RickB, no Sir, I have not. The booklet in the box has a copy write date of 1978. But that is a good idea, to look at Colt's Data page. I have inherited a Nice collection of 1911's and other hand guns, rifles, & shot guns from my dad. I'm slowly going thru them trying to figure out what I want to keep, and what I want to let go. All of the guns are at least 30 years old, some way older. I know at least 5 S&W's have never had a bullets in the cylinders.

Not Colt's data page. The Colt web site has a serial number lookup function. Enter the serial number and they tell you what year the firearm was manufactured.

I tried the S/N look up on Colt's page. I didn't have any luck. Does anyone know, what the Factory Order # Means? It's on the box next to S/N

So call them up. They have records not yet computerized.
800-962-COLT (2658)
All they will tell you is the year made, if you want to know more, a Factory Archive Letter is $100. Not worth it to me on such a recent gun, the only new information will be what dealer it was shipped to.

The serial look-up is a real crap-shoot.
I have a Colt box with model number, gun's original finish, and serial number on the end label, and when I try to look-up the date, even similar serials in the same range, I get nothing.
Other times, I've received results along the lines of, "It's a 1968 Government Model, or it's a 1953 Detective Special, or it's a 1857 2nd Model Dragoon, or . . ."

A pistol with an SM serial number prefix is a Service Model Ace, not the original Ace. The SM Ace has the floating chamber and its slide is the standard (i.e., .45) size. The original Ace slide is not as "tall", is lighter, shorter in length and has no cutout for the normal ejector.

Yes @RickB, I kind of figured that out when I checked out the S/N of another Colt, I have. @Jame K I've been doing a bunch of research on the "ACE", since I made the original post. Colt made a Service Model "ACE" in the 40's too, from what I've read. I know mine is not an Original, and was made some time in the late 70's -early 80's. I have been trying to figure out when in that time frame it was made, just for me. This one will stay in my collection, along with the Matching Gold Cup.
