I have some expeince with a .243 model. Dad's post '64 has stamped checkering, and a few other signs of cost cutting. Pre '64s in good shape tend to be worth the extra bucks.
It is basically a lever operated bolt. It is strong action that can handle modern spitzers, but it is also a loooong heavy action. Lots of metal has to move for a dent in the primer to happen. Opinions on triger pull and lock time vary from ok to not so great. Never heard anyone call it great.
It is ok to sling over the shoulder, but if you carry hands on in the brush it tends to get a little nose heavy as the day wears on.
