Hi' I picked one of these at a local gun show. The fellow said use a gunsmith to install but I'm fairly good around 98's. I know the cocking piece needs to have metal removed, but where? Anyone have a clue to a diagram or what to do?? Thanks From Canada!! JITC:confused:

The new bolt shroud should just screw right into the bolt. You may need to fit the firing pin to the hole through the shroud (remove material from the shroud, not the firing pin). You may need to trim a bit of material from the front of the bolt shroud in order to reinstall the firing pin and cocking piece due to the length of the compressed spring, but maybe not. Install the firing pin and cocking piece, and then be sure you check firing pin protrusion (.055"/1.4mm) before you fire it.

How to modify 70 style shroud to 98

Hey SCORCH , many thanks for advice. Will try as soon as it gets a little warmer(my shop onlly has a little IR heater) as its -29 degrees. :cool:Many thanks Jiminthecorner!

If that is the type of "shroud" (bolt sleeve) I think it is, with the Model 70 type side safety, metal may have to be removed from the cocking piece to allow the safety to function. The main thing is be sure that you have sear reset after installation. Put the rifle on safe, pull trigger, release trigger, release safety. If the firing pin falls, back to the drawing board, you have an unsafe rifle.
