Mod. 10 & Super Vel Ammo

From a friend, a retired LEO, I received a suppy of what I believe are Super Vel 115 gr., semi-jacketed hollow points. The rounds look in excellent shape (no corrosion, etc.). The cases are marked "PMC 38 SPL +P".
First, are these actual Super Vel rounds with this case marking?
Second, what do you think about using these as a carry round in my 2" S&W Mod. 10-5?
I've shot a cylinder of these...impressive muzzle flash!!!
Thanks.

Super Vel Ammo

Very good HOT, HOT ammo.
I have not seen any Super Vel since the IRS closed them down and slod all their equipment because the owed $180,000 in back taxes. They never paid any taxes.

I would certainly trust Weshoot2's opinions and recommendations but I have a several well-loved Model 10s and also have some 147 grain and 110 grain plus P plus ammo. I also managed to acquire along the way a like new GP-100, fixed sight, 4 inch half lugged .38 special. I save the really hot stuff for the Ruger which is mildly overbuilt for .38 special.;) I do shoot a few 158 plus Ps from the Model 10s from time to time.

I still have one complete box of 50 rds of Super Vel .45ACP brass. The cases are marked "Super Vel", and this was from the days before such a thing as "+P". What you have sounds like some reloaded PMC +P brass. The idea is the same, but Super Vel has long since ceased to exist as a brand name.

FWIW, if you DO happen to come across some actual Super Vel unfired factory ammo, don't shoot it. It would be worth much more as a "collectible" than as actual ammo. I'd sell it to an ammo collector, and then use the $$ to buy some shootable ammo.

I kept a few rounds of Super Vel ammo in the old yellow box as a curio. It is headstamped "Super Vel .38 Spec" I know that Super Vel was in business before the +P designation was established, but I don't know if it was introduced before they folded up.
I think Super Vel was gone before PMC started coming in. I strongly suspect ammo headstamped PMC was made by and for PMC.

I would imagine that ammo marked PMC was made by PMC. At least the cases were. Could be reloads and if I didn't know I would be wary as I never ever ever shoot somebody elses's reloads. (Want to see the bulged cylinder from the Colt New Service I keep as a momento of why not to use another's reloads?)

Super Vel was marked Super Vel. Any factory loaded ammo is safe in a M10.

Det C...
Like others above. I don't think you have Super Vel ammo.

Use caution.

If it were actually Super Vel, and not reloads, I wouldn't hesitate to use it. Or......sell it to a collector.

I've got an 18 rnd pack of 357 SuperVel, Nickle plated brass, headstamped Super Vel...

Methinks the others are right and you do not have SV's...

PMC .38 spec. +P AMMO.

If your ammo is not reloaded it could be PMC factory .38+P.

My current PMC ballistics data shows that ammo to be:

125 gr. JHP with a muzzle velocity of 974 ft/second and 266 ft-lbs
energy.

Agree with the others - - -

It is not Super Vel.

The very FIRST SV .38 Spl loads were put up in Norma brass, but before the first year was out, they were using their own marked cases.
Give Lee Jurras credit--He was the first to commonly market high velocity jacketed hollow points, in an effort to upgrade .38 Special performance, primarily to meet law enforcement demands. I personally believe the "POLICE" markings on the boxes were a marketing ploy, because I never heard of any dealer hesitating to sell it to anyone with the money.

The main seller was a 110 gr JHP in brass colored .38 cases. As mentioned, this was long before the "+P" designator came about. There was also a JSP version, for departments which retricted their officers from use of HP ammo. I BELIEVE this was a 112 gr. bullet.

I got some of the first .357 Mag to hit Fort Worth--Same specs--110 JHP. LOTS of muzzle flash. It didn't seem particularly accurate, though.

I only met Lee Jurras some years later, after he had sold out the Super Vel Company (or perhaps it had been foreclosed upon.) By that time, he was 'way off into the Auto Mag pistol business and didn't even want to talk about the ammunition. He was sitting at a table at a Fort Worth Gun Show, and wasn't particularly busy. I think he simply wanted to avoid the cartridge topic by that time.

Super Vel

You have a Super VEl box...but not SV ammo.

IIRC Super Vel loaded a 110 gr. JHP as well as a JSP. Fairly hot for the time... and were considered leading edge.

PMC is not SV. Sounds like someone simply re-used the box.

I have a few boxes of SV I saved... not as good as modern ammo..but innovateive 30 years ago.

FWIW

Many Thanks

Many thanks for the info, guys. Rats, thought I might have had some of the "mythical" Super Vels. No matter, these puppies are hot, judging by recoil and muzzle blast...no sings of over pressure, luckily. But, I guess I'll stick to the 158 gr. semi wadcutters as my carry round.
Off to IMTS in Chicago..almost as much fun as a big gun show.
