MOA question

Edit: some very good answers already received. Comment if you like however.

Ok. I'm learning about scopes. So I'm watching some vids- good stuff. But a vid posted by NSSF about moa has a confusing part to me. The instructor states that his scope is zeroed at 100 yards. And he proceeds to say that moa adjustments will be up 2 moa at 200, up 5 moa at 300, etc.

However, when he has a target at 25 yards, he adjusts up 4 moa. I can understand the 4 moa, but I would've thought "down" 4 moa.

I assume that it has something to do with his statement that his gun shoots 1" low.

Thanks for any clarification you can offer.

Hopefully, I understood his teaching correctly so as not to misrepresent him. The instructors name is Ryan Cleckner.

Thanks,
John

If his gun hits 1" low at 25yds with a 100yd zero, he would need to come up 4mao to hit dead center at 25yds.

If the clicks are 1/4" at 100yards, at 25yds, each click moves 1/32".

MOA is a measure of angle. There are 360 degrees in a circle, 60 minutes in a degree and 60 seconds in a minute.

1 MOA is roughly equal to a vertical distance of 1" at 100 yards, 1/4" at 25 yards, 1/2" at 50 yards, 2" at 200 yards and 3" at 300 yards. This is determined by similar triangle math.

So, your bullet flight path is a parabolic shape from your barrel exit.

Depending on your 0 distance where POI = POA, you will likely need to adjust your scope to zero at 25 yards. This adjustment is many MOA as 1 MOA does not equal as much vertical distance at 25 yards.

Thank gents. Simple explanations and new terms- parabolic path. Makes sense too.

Maybe I'll get to sight it in today:rolleyes:

It's a Linux command for installing an update.
Don't know what it has to do with this thread, though.
He's probably a Linux fan, as I am.

It is a Debian command for updating package lists available in the enabled repositories. It is my sig.

sudo apt-get upgrade to install new versions.

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to auto install new dependencies.

There's a place in your profile for you to place a sig so you don't have to keep typing it in.

You go to User CP -> Edit Signature.

He adjusts "up" because a bullet fired from a scoped rifle zeroed at 100 yards actually starts from
the bore almost 1-1/2 inches below where the scope is looking.

Unless he adjusts UP, that bullet will hit low from where the crosshairs appear to point at very short ranges.
