SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Million Mom March is announcing
a major advertising, Internet and grassroots campaign called StopAshcroft.com
aimed at blocking the confirmation of Attorney General nominee Senator
John Ashcroft.
Million Mom March President Mary Leigh Blek said: "We need an Attorney
General who supports sensible gun laws to protect our kids and our
communities. Sen. John Ashcroft won't do that. He's against banning assault
weapons. He's against background checks at gun shows. He's against child
safety locks. He's for letting people carry concealed weapons -- even in
hospitals and churches. He is in the pocket of the NRA and is not fit to
fairly enforce gun laws."
The Million Mom March will bring significant grassroots,
outside-the-beltway muscle to the growing efforts to stop the nomination of
John Ashcroft. The March has regional offices in New York, Chicago, Atlanta,
Orange County, Washington D.C. and is growing. The March has 229 chapters in
formation in 46 states and Washington D.C. -- a jump from 40 chapters before
the March.
"Ashcroft's nomination can be stopped," said Executive Director Andrew
McGuire. "When the American people learn that he is against child safety
locks and licensing for guns -- and in favor of allowing concealed weapons
-- they'll urge their Senators to vote against his confirmation."
Last year the March captured national attention and mobilized 750,000 to
Washington D.C. and more than 100,000 more in 72 cities. Some Senators
supported the Million Mom March last Mother's Day. March organizers are
asking their members to reach out to their Senators through faxes, letters,
emails and personal visits. The March expects to generate 50,000 faxes from
its web site and generate 150,000 unique visitors.
Mary Leigh Blek and her husband Charles Blek are registered Republicans
who live in Orange County, California. The Bleks' 21-year-old son, Matthew,
was shot and killed in 1994 by a teen robber wielding a "Saturday Night
Special" junk gun.
