WELCOME TO THE FIRST MILLION MOM MARCH NEWSLETTER!!!
It's March 6th, and we are in the last trimester of our nine month journey.
If we continue to compare this movement to a pregnancy, then this is about
the time when we, as a group, should really begin expanding. Just a few
short months ago, we were a mere group of 25. That was literally thousands
of moms ago. We have a real movement in the works, and it is because of you,
the volunteers who have helped get us this far.
ROSIE
The moment we have been waiting for is here. This Wednesday, March 8.
Appearing on Rosie to "announce" the march will be Brenda Jaskolka -- mother
to a seventh grade boy who was injured by a stray bullet in Philadelphia on
New Year;s Day 1999.
Sitting with Brenda will be Carole Price -- Carole Price -- Million Mom
March Maryland Coordinator and mother to 13 year-old son who was killed by a
nine-year-old boy in a gun accident. And, Catherine Murphy -- Staten Island
policewoman and mother whose 11-year-old son was killed by gun violence.
REGISTRATION
It is crucial that you remind people when you are speaking to them to
register for the MIllion Mom March. Our database is growing and it is the
only way for us to count them as one of the million. The Web Site is
www.millionmommarch.com, or they can call 1-888-989-moms.
MEDIA
In addition to Rosie, we're involved in a great media push that is going to
take the work that you all have been doing and make the MMM a household
word. The new MMM office in Washington, DC will be up and running to field
the phone calls that we expect to receive as a result of the Rosie O'Donnell
Show. The office will be staffed with Million Moms Volunteers to handle the
volume we expect.
It is so crucial that you keep doing the state and local coordinating work
that has been going on since Labor Day. Don't let the national media push
make you feel insignificant. People will get on buses and get to the march
because of the work you are doing. You are the human faces and mobilizers of
this event. Local faces on the news and local contacts are very important for
getting the marchers to Washington.
QUESTIONS?
The national office now has transportation information and organizing
packets available that will be getting out to you. The marcher lists are also
being updated and will be sent out very soon. We are working to make sure the
state coordinators will be able to be together at the March and celebrate
this great event we all have made happen.
The national office is currently working on a secure sytem of triaging
names out to state and local coordinators. An email will go out soon to all
coordinators.
Volunteers from the tri-state area will be busy helping them get out Action
Packets to interested marchers. If you need help, or want to report
endorsements, please email them at national@millionmommarch.com.
Registration Fun Facts
Activity on the Million Mom Website has increased tenfold! We actually had
to get more sophisticated technology--our old server couldn't keep up with
how many people wanted to register. Hooray!
Approximately every two minutes another mom registers. At this rate we'll
fill up the whole Mall!
Keep up the good work!
SOME SPECTACULAR MOMS
Some incredibly strong march organizers in Michigan had their cry, wiped
their tears and answered the call of duty. Distraught mothers from across
the state were reaching out to them looking for a place to vent.
They found it in these women of the Million Mom March.
Sheryl passed out flyers while waiting for a mammogram. Lori did
interviews and traded flyers that day with the Jehovah Witnesses who came to
her door. Susan, as almost all of them, did radio. Shikla from Detroit and
Mary Alice from Grand Rapids had just started and already they were giving
interviews and consoling others.
OTHER NEWS
First Lady and New York Senate Candidate Hillary Clinton endorsed the
Million Mom March during her appearance on Lifetime Television. And, Rep.
Carolyn McCarthy of New York gave us a plug on Good Morning America.
Despite the very tight real estate market, we finally found a real office
in Washington, DC. We even have real people answering the phones. Yea! A
special thanks to Jaquie and Ring a Ling Voicemail who had been giving us
free voicemail service. Our transcribing grandmas Andrea and Norma will be
reassigned new duties after a much needed break.
A special welcome to new DC coordinator Tina. Tina and the volunteers
fromMaryland, Virginia and the district will play important roles in hosting
the Mother of All Marches. Thank you in advance for this awesome
responsibility.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
What is a bus captain? What does she do?
A bus captain is responsible for just one bus. Who collects fares may vary
from bus to bus, but the captain -- according to the MMM definition -- is
responsible for getting information to his or her passengers about pick up
and departure information. And it will be the bus captain who should call or
email the national office about a parking assignment. Assignments, however,
will not be made until mid to late April when we are told which lots are
available by the Metro and DC police.
THE EVENT
We're getting lots of questions about when the event starts and ends. We
want the crowds to peak at 12:30 pm. So plan on being ON the mall by noon at
the latest. An interfaith service is being planned by the Rev. James Atwood's
committee earlier in the morning around 10 am. More on that when details
become
available. Speakers and performers will also be announced closer to the
date.
KEEP IN TOUCH!
The website will have updated information as it becomes available. Check
there first. Also, lots and lots of you want to know if dads and kids can
come too. Sure, it is Mothers' Day afterall. Bring the whole family.
If you have some news to contribute, a fun fact, or a mother you'd like to
recognize, e-mail us at national@milionmommarch.com
