Missourians we could have Mrs. Carnahan

This would be sad for the Missouri people. Article from the Springfield, MO newspaper:

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jean Carnahan will announce Monday whether she will accept an offer to become a U.S. senator if her late husband gets the most votes in the Nov. 7 election.

In a written statement issued today by Mrs. Carnahan, the widow of Democratic Gov. Mel Carnahan said she would meet over the weekend with members of her family at the Carnahan farm in Rolla to discuss the matter.

“If I decide to accept this challenge, it will be because I am ready to do this with my entire heart and soul, just as Mel did every day of his life,” Mrs. Carnahan said. “I still believe deeply in the cause for which my husband lived and died. These shared values are part of my being.”

Mel Carnahan, his eldest son and a longtime aide were killed in a plane crash October 16th.

Earlier this week, Gov. Roger Wilson said he would ask Mrs. Carnahan to serve in place of her husband should Mel Carnahan outpoll Republican Sen. John Ashcroft.

“Our family has always made important decisions together,” said Mrs. Carnahan, who has been staying at the Governor’s Mansion with sons Russ and Tom and daughter Robin since her husband’s death.

John Hancock, executive director of the Missouri Republican Party, said today he had no comment on the planned announcement.

“There’s nothing to respond to at this point,” Hancock said. “It’s not going to change the fact that this election is about giving a vote of confidence to John Ashcroft for the work he has done for the people of Missouri.”

Republicans have questioned Wilson’s public offer to Jean Carnahan, 66, to fill the Senate seat.

The GOP said it would be more appropriate to conduct a write-in campaign for Jean Carnahan. Democrats said that isn’t practical with so little time left before Election Day.

Ashcroft, speaking in Springfield prior to Mrs. Carnahan’s announcement, said he has never experienced a campaign like this one.

“It’s obviously one that calls upon all of us to think carefully about the future,” Ashcroft said.

A new poll appearing Friday in The Kansas City Star showed Mel Carnahan and Ashcroft in a dead heat at 46 percent each.

When Mrs. Carnahan’s name was introduced into the poll, Mel Carnahan had a 47 percent to 45 percent advantage.
The poll’s margin of error was 4 percent.

WHEN IT COMES TO FRIENDS THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT

It sounds as if the Dems are going for the sympathy vote. A beloved political figure dies just before a crucial election, party is stunned by his loss, what else to do, go to the wife and ask her to fill in, appeals to many voters who "feel" rather than "think", very hard for the opponent to combat without appearing to be a bully ("Look at that nasty Republican, he is attacking a woman who just lost her husband!").

I hope Ashcroft is up to the challenge.

There are definate legal issues with promising someone a political appointment prior to an election in order to garner votes. There will be a legal challenge to this election if the dead guy wins and the wife is appointed. Then again, I would not be surprised if it's just a ruse to gather the votes of the "feel-gooders". That's the problem with giving voter registration cards and driver's licenses away in Cracker-Jack boxes. Semper Fi....Ken

There seems to be no limit on how low the libeal Democrats will sink to obtain a political office. Lies, sympathy votes, it's all fair game.
Clinton has taught the Dems well.

Mendacity is the system we live in.

I've always thought this kind of thing is simply insane .... just about as idiotic as most nepotism. Sorry to say it for our friends in MO, but if MO voters fall for this, they'll deserve whatever they get. Damn shame.

Why not?

Lazy MO gunowners failed to vote (~17% voted!) for Prop. B last year and, as a result, we failed to get what would have been the first popularily elected CCW in the nation.

If they fail to elect the Repub, they, like PRKers, deserve what they get.

My .02.

Albin.....wrong!
It was not the fault of "lazy gun owners" that propostion B failed to pass April 6, 1999. It was the fault of the, now thankfully deceased, Carnahan and his corrupt cronies.
Here are the facts:

The votes were being counted by computer. When half the votes had been counted the measure was passing state wide by a margin of 84% and passing in St. Louis County by a margin of 77%. At the half way point the computers counting the votes inexplicably crashed requiring that the second half be counted by hand. In order for the final vote to have came out the way it did 93% of the second half of the people in St. Louis County had to have voted against the measure. This is in spite of the fact that voters in neighboring St. Charles and Jefferson Counties, whom always vote within a point or two of St. Louis County, passed it by the 77% margin that St. Louis County was reporting at the half way point. In my home county of Greene (Springfield) in order for the vote to have ended the way it did 104% of the second half had to have voted against it. New math?!?!?!? State election laws say that if a measure fails by 3% or less then the state must do a recount at the states expense. The margin was 3.6%. Damn convenient I'd say. The state election laws further state that for a citizen(s) to contest a vote they must first wait for the governor to certify the election. The governor is required by those same laws to either certify or decertify an election within 30 days of the election. The citizen(s) must then post a cash bond to cover the cost of a recount. There were several Missourians, myself included, that got busy getting pledges from the industry to post the bond once Carnahan certified the election. The low life, criminal #$&&#$! refused to comply with state law and certify it. He only did so one year later when the election and prop. B measure was all but forgotten by most.
It would not have made a rat's hindend difference if every gun owner in the state would have voted Carnahan and his fellow criminals were going to cheat in any way needed to screw us.
So you see Missourians do not derserve what we get because of voter apathy. That is also the reason that I hope Carnahan rots in.....
I and many others busted our butts on this in MO and got screwed through ballot fraud perpitrated by the people in power and am therefore quite passionate about it.

All I have to say is that I live in roughly the center of the metro area, and the sympathy/emotion vote is BIG. Make sure folks know that Ashcroft still needs the vote to get out. Also, if in conversation, don't engage in any "bashing," but just say that you're not comfortable with (a) someone with very little experience or (b) you don't want to see a party machine's puppet.

What has his widow done to deserve being elected to such an office?

I surely do hope that this sympathy issue doesn't ruin the chances of a highly qualified, good, moral, and trustworthy man. It will be a black day in politics if it DOES happen.

Heck! It will be a black day if we get Holden for Governor, or Gore/Leiberman in the White House!
