This would be sad for the Missouri people. Article from the Springfield, MO newspaper:
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jean Carnahan will announce Monday whether she will accept an offer to become a U.S. senator if her late husband gets the most votes in the Nov. 7 election.
In a written statement issued today by Mrs. Carnahan, the widow of Democratic Gov. Mel Carnahan said she would meet over the weekend with members of her family at the Carnahan farm in Rolla to discuss the matter.
“If I decide to accept this challenge, it will be because I am ready to do this with my entire heart and soul, just as Mel did every day of his life,” Mrs. Carnahan said. “I still believe deeply in the cause for which my husband lived and died. These shared values are part of my being.”
Mel Carnahan, his eldest son and a longtime aide were killed in a plane crash October 16th.
Earlier this week, Gov. Roger Wilson said he would ask Mrs. Carnahan to serve in place of her husband should Mel Carnahan outpoll Republican Sen. John Ashcroft.
“Our family has always made important decisions together,” said Mrs. Carnahan, who has been staying at the Governor’s Mansion with sons Russ and Tom and daughter Robin since her husband’s death.
John Hancock, executive director of the Missouri Republican Party, said today he had no comment on the planned announcement.
“There’s nothing to respond to at this point,” Hancock said. “It’s not going to change the fact that this election is about giving a vote of confidence to John Ashcroft for the work he has done for the people of Missouri.”
Republicans have questioned Wilson’s public offer to Jean Carnahan, 66, to fill the Senate seat.
The GOP said it would be more appropriate to conduct a write-in campaign for Jean Carnahan. Democrats said that isn’t practical with so little time left before Election Day.
Ashcroft, speaking in Springfield prior to Mrs. Carnahan’s announcement, said he has never experienced a campaign like this one.
“It’s obviously one that calls upon all of us to think carefully about the future,” Ashcroft said.
A new poll appearing Friday in The Kansas City Star showed Mel Carnahan and Ashcroft in a dead heat at 46 percent each.
When Mrs. Carnahan’s name was introduced into the poll, Mel Carnahan had a 47 percent to 45 percent advantage.
The poll’s margin of error was 4 percent.
