Mini rebuild - where do I go?

Ok so a client comes in today with a pretty old mini-14, some rust but easily still better than some others that I have seen. He wants to keep it and rebuild it. My first question was why, for the price of a rebuild he could buy a new gun! Anyway, he is pretty darn insistant. So I told him I would have some info for him on Monday. What the hell do you do to rebuild a minil? I never heard of anything failing on them, especially the early ones. He wants a new barrell for sure, but he has barely used the gun, he says that he has only ever fired 200 rounds through it!!! And he has had it sine 1980.

three companies come to mind when it comes to mini

Ruger - parts are factory replacement so no problems, just aware of inherent mini fault (accuracy)

Accuracy systems - great product but very expensive

Accuracy rifle systems - dont know much about them

any thoughts would help guys - still want hiim to just buy a new rifle!!!

It does not need a rebuild. He is just a stubborn moron. Give him back the rifle and tell him to take it elsewhere.

You do have an interesting problem. From the information you have provide I am guessing that the Mini is a boat gun for your customer against pirates.

The first thing I would do is contact Robar to see if they could strip it and give it a NP-3 finish. (almost water proof)

The second thing is to get an Accu-Strut for it.

And the third thing is to get a Butler Creek folding rifle stock for the rifle. I have one on my Mini-30 it is much better than the wooden one the rifle comes with.

Why you preach that cheap chinese **** I don't understand. It all sucks and I have no idea how you interpreted the OP as saying it was a boat rifle

Accustrut is a very good product and will make that old mini shoot alot better than it currently shoots. Trigger job was my first upgrade to my 580 series, accustrut was second. A good stock like jim said although im not a big fan of BC. 1911 style recoil buffers smooth out the recoil and keep the brass from dinging up and flying into the next zipcode. Retorque the gas block. It helped my rifle alot with accuracy. The sweetspot on mine was 34in/lbs of torque.

Guys thanks for the info, will look into retourqing the gas block and also look into the accustrut. Ironocally it is a boat gun, he is a fisherman, he uses it to shoot at sharks and as for protection against harm (think Bahamas and drug trade). I was going to dura coat it, although I have been looking at the barrell and it has quite a bit of surface rust, some of it pitting. the charging arm has some as well, but I am less worried about that and more worried about the barrel, they are pretty thin to begin with. the dura coat is something that we are just getting into here and could work for everything except the barrel. My fear is that the when removing the rust from the barrel we could leave large weak spots, so I think I actually agree with the owner that if he wants to keep that particular gun then he must get a new barrel. my mentor who just got out of hospital took a look at it and thinks that he should get a different gun, he told him he would onlyu value it at 100 bucks and that most of that would be for the stock, original 1980's wood, in excellent condition.
