Mini 30 question

Does it not like some steel-cased ammo? The first time I took it out, I shot Hornady steel-cased through it, no problems. The other day I took it out, along with an AK. I was shooting some Herter's through the AK, no problems. I switched to the Mini, and it would ignite about half the rounds. I first thought it was something wrong with the rifle since the last time I shot it, then remembered that I had used the different ammo before. If it's just that it doesn't like the Herter's, I won't shoot it, but I was just wondering.

You're probably just going to have to do some good ol' fashioned experimenting. I don't think steel cases would affect ignition. Perhaps that ammo just uses harder primers the Mini couldn't handle. Might have been a bad batch of ammo too.

Other folks report Mini-30's displaying failure to fire with certain import ammo.

Over the years I've shot a wide range of steel case ammo through my MIni-30 w/ no problems. But.........now that I have a beater AK clone, my Mini gets brass cased domestic ammo, or reloads only.

Worn mag feed lips, extractor and ejector damage , all possible results of steel cases in the Mini, will be minimized with brass cases.

Steel cases for the AK, brass for the Mini is my new practice.

Heck, even my CZ 527 won't set off those harder primers half the time. The AK is like the hammer of Thor when it comes to ignition reliability.

The Herter's is Berdan primed. Maybe they are harder primers? Anyway, I'll try some different types of ammo and see what happens. I already know it likes the Hornady.

I looked up Berdan primers on the internet, and although it was interesting historical reading, i.e., that Berdan primers were invented in the US and are used mostly in Europe, and Boxer primers were invented in England, and are used mostly in the US, I didn't see anything alluding to them being harder to ignite.
