Mini 30 ammo

I have been trying out various types of ammo for my mini. The Golden Tiger ammo is just out of the question because almost every round was a misfire, so I decided I would trade someone my golden tiger for their yugo military surplus. While the yugo shot much better I had a couple FTE. I have shot the Federal American Eagle with no problems what so ever, and have a brand new pack of winchester. Only problem is their expensive! real pricey. Anyone know of a brand that will function more then not function? This is just for target practice becuase the Federal and Winchester is to be used only when its needed.

Not sure about the golden tiger's, but if you use laqured case ammo, be sure to clean the chamber out afterward. Sometimes the laquer melts and leaves sticky residue in there. Check around, there's lots of kinds of ammo to try. Good luck in your search.

Ive been saving my spent ones only thing is I gotta save up for the reloading kit. And im not exactly sure what I need.

1) Single stage press
2) die set in your caliber
3) case trimmer
4) calipers
5) powder dispenser (don't go cheap here)
6) scale - there are a ton to choose from but I use a cheapo eBay scale with .001 gram accuracy. Make sure if you get electronic it has a setting for grains (not grams)

7) hand priming tool or ram priming unit for your single stage press (some presses come with a built in priming unit, but they usually are no bueno)

8) a good manual - I have a Lymans that was a very good read for me as a beginner. You can get many manuals, the more the merrier, probably a good idea to at least have two.

9) a tumbler and cleaning media for your brass

10) a notebook to keep your recipes and take notes on their performance (I use excel spreadsheet)

Thats about all I can think of that I use regularly. There are other things people buy. Micrometers to measure neck thickness, concentricity gauges and stuff... I don't think its necessary, but some people like to control as many variables as possible with their reloads.

no problems

My early model Mini-30 has never given me a bit of trouble.

I keep reading about Fail to Fire issues but have not experienced same. Most all my ammo is either brass cased US stuff, which I reload for another rifle, or Wolf steel case, which I bought a good bit of when x39 was affordable. I am shooting up the last of my Norinco now.

Hmmm. Mini-30?? Is that the more expensive, less reliable alternative to the SKS?:D;)

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. jd

Cabela's is selling a line branded MFS which is supposed to be boxer primed brass cased. All the ammo you listed except the Federal and Winchester is berdan primed and most is steel cased=nonreloadable.
The cheapest Yugo ammo is also corrosive.

Have you checked to make sure you're getting a good strike on the primer. If the problem is a soft hit, that can be easily fixed. Sounds like you mini might just need some tuning.

Barnaul brand works excellent in mini-thirties. Primer is much better than other Russian ammo like wolf etc.

Since using Bear ammo I have had zero misfires.

The mini 30 is not made to shoot steel case. Not saying it wont, but its not good for the gun. And yes im sure my firing pin is striking it, becuase the misfires have the dent.

The word easy and fix really stuck out to me, what do you have in mind.

The firing pin of the mini-30 is not designed to strike a primer that is hardened so as to take the deeper harder hitting firing pin of an AK47.

Its not steel cased ammo that is causing it.

There is a balancing act between having a primer tough enough not get a hole dented in it deep enough to cause a blowout by an AK firing pin , and a primer that is soft enough to be set off by a commercial american made rifle.

Don't blame your gun. Don't blame steel cased ammo, because there are brands that wont misfire in a mini-30.

It a problem with Russian design of the AK and ammunition manufactured to fire in it SAFELY. Which means that the mini-30 is a lot safer to shoot all types of ammo. Because reloaded ammo with boxer primers may not be very safe to shoot in some AK47s.

Yes that is correct

This is odd. My Mini 30 would fire everything I put it in. Might need a stronger hammer spring. Wolf makes them for about 7 bucks. And for what its worth, my Mini was far more accurate than the SKSs I had.
