Mini-14: Ranch vs. Standard

I have decided on the blue version of the Mini-14. I know it is not exactly a target rifle. I can't decide which to get, the ranch or the standard. Anyone have an opinion?

I wouldn't put a conventional scope on the ranch. However, a red dot might be good for night use at some future time. However, until I do this, I would have to use the flip up sight. It seems pretty flimsy. Is there any possible way to add a red dot scope to a standard model?

The best setup I've seen for the standard rifle is the Scout-style mount from Ranch Products. There is a picture (and a better price than I paid!) at:

www.andean-inc.com

I use mine with a tasco optima 2000- great out to maybe 150 yards, beyond that the 3.5 min dot is too big. also use a 2x pistol 'scope with excellent results.
I tried a b-square no-'smithing mount but it wouldn't hold zero reliably. The scout mount replaces the top half of the gas block and does not move.

The flip-up sight on the Ranch is flimsy and Ruger knows it. If you plan to scope a rifle and mount the scope over the receiver (and not on the barrel), go with the Ranch. It has an internal recoil buffer and horizontal ejector which helps dampens the bashing suffered by the scope (or in your case, red dot).

Consider the stainless version. I like the ranch rifle because I can scope it or replace the cheap ruger peep sight with a nice one from Weaver. Lot's of options.

Another thing about the ranch rifle which is nice is that ejects brass sidewise not straight up. And there is an internal buffer which softens recoil somewhat (to protect your scope - but you can feel it).

All in all the "ranch rifle in stainless" is probably the best Ruger Mini-14. Just my opinion.
