Mini-14 Questions

I live in the PRK and, therefore, am restricted in what semi-auto rifle in .223 I can buy (have a bolt-action .223). Two questions: I came into possession of quite a bit of the South African '80's production 5.56 ammo; will the Ruger reliably fire this ammo (thinking here of light primer strikes, perhaps); second, should I get the blued or stainless Mini-14 (arguments either way)? Thanks!

Don't know about that ammo, but my Mini eats just about anything I put in it, including the cheaper UMC .223 and even some Wolf and other remanufactured/reloaded stuff. Never really had a problem (about a thousand+ rounds through her now) except maybe a shell not ejecting fully and getting stuck once. I've found that ammo affects accuracy more than it does reliability in my rifle. Don't know which finish is 'best', just get whichever you prefer. I got the plain-old blue because it's a 'work' gun and that was cheaper.

Anybody else have problems with different ammo brands in their Mini?

It Depends

Since the Mini-14 is not the most accurate .223, but indeed is very reliable, it does not matter whether you get stainless or carbon steel. I choose stainless with a plastic stock for no other reason than I thought it was cool.

If you were to do a lot of ranch work in bad weather then go with stainless and a plastic stock. Otherwise it really does not matter.

My Mini will shoot every thing I put in it. I can not say the same for my AR-15 (origanal Colt A-2) I like my AR but whould not rely on it in combat. I know that you are going to say clean it more but this is a frickin combat rifle and should not haved to be cleaned every 300 rounds. My AR-180 on the other hand is a shooter and not as fussy as the inferior AR-15. The Mini is the second gun I whould grab if I had to bug out.

I like the Stainless and I'm happy with a wooden stock.

Never had 'light strike" with a Mini. Come to think of it I don't think I've ever jammed one. They are finicky about magazines though. Some won't feed all the rounds, that irritates me.

I like my stainless and I have no qualms about trying cheap ammo in it.

I've heard the AR-180 has brutal recoil? True?

My H&R 10ga shotgun has brutal recoil, but a semi automatic rifle, naw.

My favorite AR-180 quote?

"The Armalite AR180.... the ultimate solution to the problem of being attacked by waves of midgets or cerebral palsey victims" - Fred Rexer, 1980
