mini 14 questions

I am interested in the action of the garand rifle, and was planning on getting an m1a, but I have a ton of .223, and would not like to have to stock up on 7.62. Is the mini 14's action really a scaled down garand, or does it just resemble the garand and function differently? How close is it? If it is entirely different, who, if anyone, makes a garand in .223? Thanks for your help in clearing up this matter.

Mini-14 ... evolutionary improvement

The rotating bolt action of the Mini-14 is very similar to the M1/M14. The major difference between the three is the gas system and the attachment of the recoil spring, the Ruger is much more simplified than either of the other two. But it's more of an evolutionary improvement than a total redesign. There are also a number of obvious cosmetic differences in the stocks, hardware, handguards, etc. The Ruger's trigger group is almost an exact copy of the M1/M14 design, very robust. The Mini and the Garand both have a plain lug bolt. The M-14 uses a roller bearing lug. The thing that makes the Garand unique (and cool) is the enblock clip. If you were to disassemble a M1 down to it's component pieces and compare it to a Mini-14 part-for-part (discounting cosmetics) most of the extra parts left in the M1 pile would be devoted to the action of the enblock clip. -- Kernel

Actually, the Mini-14 gas system is probably closest to an M1 carbine -- better, maybe, because there's no piston at all. The trigger group, as mentioned, is essentially the same as the M1/M14.
