Mini-14: How to remove rear sight?

On the last one I had, all I had to do was shoot the gun a few times and it broke right off.
It's in a dovetail, isn't it? Drift it out with a mallet and a non-marring punch.

Yep, the easiest way is just shoot the gun a few times, but you gotta keep your eyes open so you can tell which way it goes flying. Mine fell into some tall grass, and took me an hour to find.

I know why you are the lonegunman. Nobody can stand your dumb sense of humor. It is a standard rear site. There is no way a standard sight flew off your rifle.

I'm guessing here - just try screwing the elevation adjustment all the way up. It may just unscrew completely. There may be a light coil spring under the horizontal leg of the aperture leaf, holding it up against the elevation screw. Watch out for the spring-loaded detent pin.

Do you have the owner's manual? Take a look at the exploded view. That may give you a clue to how it's put together.

And for the record, I did have parts fall off mine - the roll pin & washer on the right end of the windage screw.

FYI, mine broke from recoil. Ruer sent me new parts at my expense and they promptly broke, too. We were all being humorous, but as Homer Simpson says"It's funny because it's true!"

So Dave3006, I guess you think if the World Trade Center was made out of Ruger Mini 14 sights, it would still be standing today?

They can break with recoil.

Ruger sells spare rear sights. Why would they need to if they never break?

I had a piece of .025 copper witness wire thru the roll pin on mine, just to hold it in place.
If you remove the pin, you can unthread the windage screw and the sight will be removed completely.- Of course you have to remove the elevation adjustment screw and appeture first.

Got an old one and a Ranch Rifle

The Old (1980) Mini14,I drifted out the pin on the POS peepsight furnished by Mr Ruger's minions, and replaced it with a nice Millett
microclick (with a small screwdriver) peepsight. The rifle's groups tightened up considerably, as I was actually able to see through the replacement's arpeture.
The Ranch Rifle has a nice sturdyBurris fixed power scope mounted on it that has so far resisted the rifles efforts to buck it off. It shoots groups minutely smaller than the older model with the addon peepsights.
Notice I'm not telling what _size_ groups are being produced by either of these little autoloading wonders;)
These things are a lot like AK's, they keep on shooting despite loads of abuse, but they'll never be a threat in a club centerfire match:D ;) :p
