Mini-14 Ammo Q's

Will soon be receiving my first rifle, a SS/Syn Mini-14 RR and have some questions regarding ammunition for it:

1. Some manufacturers (e.g. Federal Premium) seem to make both 'Rem 223' and 'Rem 223 (5.56x45mm)'. What's the difference? I assumed for my Mini-14 I'd need the 5.56x45mm? Any difference between the two?

2. I'm looking for 2 types of ammo: home/self-defense and practice -
For self-defense use hollowpoints?
What would you recommend for practice?

For self-defense ammo I'll spend whatever I need to for the best.
For practice ammo, I don't mind spending a little extra for an accurate quality ammo that isn't too dirty either.

Recommendations?

Thanks!

If its a New Stainless Steel Mini its got a 1-9 twist rate. Go with 60gr or higher. I personally don't notice a difference between 60gr and 55gr bullets.

But there is a difference between the 69gr and the 62gr vs. the 55gr bullets. SS109 or M855 ammo is expensive but its the only 62gr ammo I know of Besides American Eagle's.

If you don't reload and you want accurate rounds DO WHAT I SAY AND GET BUY HEAVY BULLETS.
For Home defence stick with Hollow Points but plan on putting it threw a few walls.

If your just plinking.............. anything works;)
