mini 14 accurizing

I have a approx. 15 year old, blue, mini-14 with a 1 in 7 twist. It has an upgraded post front sight but is completely stock otherwise. I get 4"-5" groups at 100 yards with most ammo, including handloads. This gun has very little wear and low round count.

Any tips on modifications that would improve the groups would be appreciated.

I would like to stay with the iron sights.

I am considering bedding with accraglass, a trigger job, replacement stock and finally, but hopefully not, a match barrel.
Thanks,
Jeff

That's accurate for a Mini-14...

I'd take the money you'd spend on an accuracy job, and buy a Savage M12-BVSS-S in .223.

Then you have TWO guns!

JRR; I agree with Bogie. That's good shootin' for a Mini. If I can hit a silhouette at 100 yards routinely that makes me happy. I simply accept my Mini-14 as is. Might be alot of money to pull in the groups an inch or two. Best Regards, J. Parker

Do a search on this site this subject comes up every now and again. There are Gunsmiths that can put on heavier barrels. I believe the barrels cost in the $300-$400 range. Yes there expensive!!! I personally never do any worse than 3MOA but thats with reloads and heavier bullets.

Clark Customs Guns makes a stabilizer

which must be fitted onto the barrel. It suppose to reduce the vibration of the muzzle and thus deliver greater accuracy. Per the writeup in the Dec. 2000 edition of the Accurate Rifle, it works. The bad thing is the price is somewhere around $300! Anybody know the website of Clark Customs Guns?

I personaly wouldn't bother with accurizing a Mini-14. They were never envisioned to be tack-drivers.

Pick up a boltgun for accuracy.

I've read that if you have the barrel shortened it'll help, also check the torque of the gas plug bolts. Mine has milk jug accuracy at that distance and that's fine with me, I'd buy another rifle before I spent a lot of money on it.

JRR,

As pretty much everyone else has said, the mini was never meant to be a super accurate rifle. 4-5" groups are generally the norm. I belong to a mini-14 list where there is always lots of talk about accurizing minis. Its fairly expensive and doesn't seem to tighten the groups more than an inch or so- the mini isnt a MOA rifle. I'd take the cash you are going to spend on accurizing and buy a bolt action rifle.

Thanks everybody,
I think that a little bedding work and some trigger stoning is all that I will do. I can do the work, and the cost of the bedding materials is small. Shooting the 63 gr. and 69 gr. bullets might improve things as well.

I don't shoot my Mini Ranch much since I got an AR-15. I've thought about an accurizing job, but always shy away from putting that kind of money into the Mini. It's a neat gun, but not a tack driver. You'd be better off investing in another rifle--and you could do a lot worse than an AR-15 for accuracy!

I talked to a guy at the range that had shortened his Mini. There is an area a little more than half way up the barrel where you can see a seam. He stated that if you cut the barrel there, it would increase the accuracy. He had it cut and had some sort of brake/site combo on the end. He was shooting 2.5" at 90 yards.

I'm with a lot of others here, I always thought that "Mini-14" and "Accurate" didn't belong in the same sentence. I've seen a few of them at the range, and shot several of them. There was one that shot 3" groups, but in general they were considerably worse, more like 5-6" groups.

My mini produces 2 1/2 groups at 100 yd. for about the first 4 shots. Then it opens up to 4 - 6" until the barrel cools back down. My AR shoots 1 1/2" groups for as long as I want to keep shooting. This is a good mini, but it's not worth the money to make it better.
