Mini 14 .223 - Wolf or South African ammo?

I've put about 700nds of Wolf 55grn fmj through my Mini-14 with almost no problems. I had one round that didn't fire but I determined that some how that round had no powder in it. Even with my Mini I can shoot 1.5" groups at 50yrds the Wolf ammo (that's the max distance that I have shot my Mini). I have recently puchased a couple South African battle packs but have not gotten to shoot any of it yet. However I do have some concerns about shooting 5.56x.45 in my .223 Mini-14. I have only recently learned that this could be dangerous. I have heard of one incident of the SA ammo breaking a Mini-14 firing pin, but that ciuld have just as easily been a defective firing pin.

I bought a case of PMP .223 Ammo in 55 gr. FMJ.
It shoots a consistant sub 1" 5 round group at 50 yds though both my buddy's and my own Mini-14.
The rifles have 3-9X scopes and are fired from a bipod rest. Nothin' fancy. Out of the 5 rounds, 3 or 4 are normally sharing holes. The overall cartridge length varies a maximum of .011"

Have not used any wolf ammo. Still afaid of the steel cases. I have fired countless rounds of south african PMP from my Mini-14 with no problems what so ever.

MUNK, why in the world would you be afraid of steel cases? As far as i know they are better for most every reason i can think of.

Wolf ammo is good Russian ammo. Some people hate it, some love it. I have a case of it on the way. The reason I'm getting Wolf is because it's new production, it's relatively inexpensive, & it's accurate. Steel cases are always a plus, unless MUNK can explain otherwise...

South African surplus, is good ammo considering it's usually late 80's production. They come in watertight battlepacks which are great for other purposes than carrying ammo. It's great ammo all around.

All though Wolf is cheap, it's also stinky.

I don't know. So many people bash wolf ammo because they say it's dirty, occasionaly double loaded and steel cased. People claim that the steel cases (being harder than brass) can cause wear and tear that brass cased ammo doesn't. I don't really know the absolute truth, but until I get some more hard evidence, I'll stick with the cheap brass stuff for range work.

If you don't quite trust Steel case...

Try Silver bear ammo. Steel case yes but nickle plated! Look NICE too. Either way both are good blasting ammo at a reasonable price. Have run both through my mini-14 and Ar-15 no problems! Hope this helps DAROGUE1
