Milsurp 30-06 recoil

I have a 1903A3 that I shoot once in a while, and I never thought the recoil of the 30-06 was very severe.

I recently got an M1 Garand from the CMP, and the other day I took both of them to the range.

Two things I noticed after shooting the M1 first.

The 1903 felt like I was holding a feather.
All of a sudden, the 1903 recoil felt like I was getting hit in the shoulder with a sledge hammer.

The M1 may be heavy but it sure tames the recoil from the 30-06. I still like both rifles a lot, but I think I will shoot them on separate outings in the future.

The Garand is heavier and gas operated, therefore less felt recoil. The '03 is a bolt gun that is lighter thus more recoil.

I love my Garand. Huge satisfying BOOM, but the recoil is pretty mild. My r700 in 308 is brutal by way of comparison.

the garand absorbs recoil mainly through the spring in the action. Bolt actions send recoil straight back to the shooter. You can by commercial ammo with a lighter bullet that wont hammer you as much.

I don't find my SC 1903a3 objectionable. Maybe its how one shoots it.

I don't shoot from the bench. unless I'm shooting off hand, I use a sling. The sling if propertly uses allows the recoil to be assorbed in the whole body, not just the shoulder.

If you shoot from the bench, the rifle normally isn't held tight, its laying on bags or something, the shoulder takes the full force of the recoiling rifle.
