Moms who believe politicians just aren't listening to their concerns about stricter gun laws will be lacing up their sneakers for the Million Mom March this Mother's Day. While march organizers are hoping 1 million moms will converge on the National Mall in Washington, Chicago is hosting its own march and rally for those who want to make their voices heard but can't get to the nation's capital.
"This march is a message from moms and their families that they are tired of complacency and want laws passed that take guns off the streets and make guns less accessible to children," says Steve Young, coordinator of the Chicago Million Mom March and a dad who lost his 19-year-old son, Andrew, to gun violence in 1996.
March officials want to see state and federal politicians adopt policies that reduce the accessibility of firearms to children, including safety locks for all handguns and a limit on handgun purchases to one per month.
You don't have to be a mom to stand up and be counted this Mother's Day. The Chicago march will take place at 1 p.m. May 14 at Lake Shore Drive and Randolph Street. For more information call 312-648-4MOM. To learn more about the national campaign call 888-989-MOMS or visit the organizers' Web site at www.millionmommarch.com.[/quote]
I don't think I'll be able to make it to the D.C. counter march, but I'll make sure to counter the one here in Chicago. What are YOU doing for Mother Day?
