Milled AKs?

I need to know about the Milled AK Variants that are on the Market for about $425 now. Are these any good??? How do they compare to the Stamped AKs? Is it worth close to 200 extra for a Milled AK?

No. The original AK-47 had a stamped receiver. With poor materials and a poor workmanship, the Soviets switched to a milled receiver that weighed over a pound heavier. That pound was insurance. They finally got the Stamped design down with the AKM from which all modern stamped receivers are akin to. The Milled is no better than the stamped, but it is heavier and more expensive to manufacture. If you want a heavier gun, I'd pay $200 less and buy some lead weights to hang from a stamped gun. The Bulgarian Milled Gun is a nice gun for the money, but no nicer than a well made Stamped gun such as the Hungarian SA-85.

The milled guns have an advantage when it comes to Sec922r compliance because the trunion is an integral part of the receiver. It's just one less part that you need to replace with lower quality US versions.

Tennese Guns (865)577-1939 has milled Bulgarian AK receivers, with barrel installed, for $300. You just drop in US fire control parts and a US stock set and you're good to go.

If it's the stamped choices are Romanian, Chinese, or Egyptian, the milled Bulgarian would be the way to go.

Kalashnikov USA is advertising the "Saiga II, AK-103" for $495. This variant is the full pistol gripped AK, with muzzle brake and everything, not the typical Saiga. It would definately worth $500 to have a real Kalashnikov in standard config.

Destructo -- I looked on Kalashnikov USA's page (weapons-russian.com), and the AK103's are listed as LE only -- what's up with this? Am I misunderstanding something? Are they referring to Pre-ban config. only? I'm kind of an AK newbie (but thinking more about getting one with the way things are going) and would appreciate any info you might have. Thanks.

Andrew

Kalashnikov USA has an ad in the September 4 issue of The Shotgun New, page 148, and makes no mention of being a LEO gun. It's quite likely that they have not updated their web site. Springfield still has some info about their original SAR-8s on their's.

If it is LEO, why would they advertise it in a publication like SGN? Stranger things have happened, but...

Destructo -- Thanks for the reply. I've sent an E-mail to the company to clarify this (it's after business hours now), and I'll post the result.
