Military- Personal Weapons for Deployment

Looking to see if any military people who have been deployed have taken a personal weapon with them. Both sons are reservists and MP's. The Marine is on the list to be deployed in the future to Afganistan. Being a new guy he doesn't know much about what he will need to bring on his own. Thinking knife, flashlight ect but dont know if a good Christmas present could be a 9mm since this is the current military pistol round. Actually thought the Beretta 92f so he could practice some, but wondered if he could take it too.

After three deployments to Iraq, I can say this: They'll let you take anything there... getting it back is the hard part. I've kept my personal weapons at home for that very reason.

One of the reservists in the shop was shedualed to be deployed. We all chipped in and got him a hideout gun. A S&W 442. And a couple boxes of ammo. He was able to take the gun with him.... but not bring it back. When he rotated back he gave the gun and ammo to another solder. I hope it's still in Iraq being passed from solder to solder...

a guy in my last reserve unit snuck over a small .22 as a hold out, retard got caught shooting spiders with it. claimed he bought it from a local, but still got busted down a grade.

we also had guys show up for deployment with katanas and such strapped to their ruck, they weren't allowed to bring them. machete was pushing it.

they were issuing about everybody surefires, but may have stopped it.

a good knife, and flashlight.

something like a kel tec p32 would slide right between the sapi plate and Kevlar, and nobody would know the difference.

Troy, You have to admit, there are some pretty big spiders over there! I hated those things. But yeah, if you are shooting spiders with .22 that you have illegally taken into country, you are not the brightest bulb on the Christmas Tree.

What about replacing all but the top 2-3 rounds,in case it gets checked, in your m9 with some quality hp ammo? I don't know if this would be helpful if they wear
armor but I'd they are in plain clothes the improved stopping power could he good.

The terrorists do not follow the Geneva convention or care about "civilized" warfare. They committed murder on civilians not a "fair" govt target to declare war. The are cowards and should not be treated as legitimate soldiers described in the Geneva convention.

Just a thought. Anyone who has been what are your thoughts? Also anyone taking tomahawks like in vietnam?

i actualy had a box oh hornady tap i took over. i spaced it 3 tracer, 3 tap, tracer, in all my mags.

it lasted about 2 months before all my mags were used up.

Two good "Leatherman" -style multitools with specific features for explosives are the G-7400 Demolition Explosive Technician Multi-Plier 600 by Gerber Knives, and the B61 SOG EOD Powerlock (with different configurations) by SOG knives. Both are quality products.

Thank you for your service, everyone.

Maybe we could send troops some HPs in some Holiday care packages.

I've been out for years - NEVER could take a personal firearm on a deployment.

I'll tell you what I would want as a gift if I were deployed - my own GPS. I had a plugger, followed by a slugger. But I don't know if everyone has their own GPS issued or not now. I wish I had my current Garmin back when - waypoints, speed, altitude, ETA. So small too.
Don't know if a personal GPS would work or not overseas (Canada and Mexico - Yes). Always had to download the almanac with GI Gps.

Another Idea - one of those sub-notebooks with SKYPE loaded (and a $20 headset) - if there is broadband available he now has his own personal communications system to the entire world.

I said the same thing on another site and was roundly flamed. I heard all about the personal guns someone's father, uncle, or cousin carried in WWII (including an M14!), and how everyone in the military carried personal weapons all the time (where were they at Ft. Hood?). Some wannabe rambos just can't understand that the military frowns on people toting unauthorized weapons.

Sure, it can be done. So can a lot of other illegal things; great until you get caught.

Jim

Even if he could carry a personal pistol, he'd be far better off carrying a couple of extra M16 magazines instead.

The last thing a soldier or Marine should bring to a battle is a freakin pistol.

Unless he is a tunnel rat.

They carried personal weapons in Nam that's why the cops couldn't buy a Model 19 without waiting months in the 60's. Coming back is another story. WWII G.I.'s were allowed to bring back captured weapons for themselves now they can only come back as war trophy's for museums

They'll let you take anything there...

It's easier to get things there but not a sure-fire thing. Before I got smart & came over to the Armor & Cav world, I was Aviation and we had a CW3 get busted bringing his own private 92FS & 9mm hollowpoints (tried to hide them in a tool-box ). He had a fun sit-down with the CG for a while and joined the unit in-theater a bit later.

One of my buddies had a Glock & a Colt .380 that were hand me downs from guys rotating home, but as Iraq becomes a FOB-fest things are changing.

The guys from 2nd Bat up in Ft. Lewis who knocked off a bank with AKs kinda ruined the idea of sneaking back weapons for everyone else.

I've been out for a while but I still have contacts that are active. It's not too hard to smuggle a peronal weapon to the sandbox, it won't come back with you and if you get caught with it over there the least that will happen is that it will wind up at the bottom of a well or river. However!!!!! try and bring it back to the US and you are in deep Kim-Chi, possible Court-Marshall, reduction in grade, maybe stockade time. Unless of course if you are a Major or above, then they will let you resign for the good of the service. By 1967-68 Personal weapons in Vietnam were a no-no. There were enough 45's and 38's floating around you didn't need a person weapon. The last two times I returned from Nam we went through metal detectors and customs inspections { and luggage searched }. Tunnel rats in Nam were not issued any specify weapon, they used what ever was available. There were a few experimental handguns in use but they were very rare. Most of the stories you hear about " this is what I carried when I was a tunnel rat " are from people who never left Saigon.
