Mil dot scope recommendations

Hi,

I'm thinking it's about time I upgrade my scope for my .270. I really want a 12x scope that will allow quick range estimations such as a mil dot or ballistic plex. I saw the Leupold Mark AR has a decent price but I'm uncertain how easy it would mount on my Remington 798, or how well it will handle the extra recoil. Does anybody know of a good mil dot or similar reticle scope under $400 that might work or should I just stick to a duplex until I can save more money?

It is a Leupold so I wouldn't worry too much, it has a lifetime warranty. If it breaks send it back to Leupold and they will fix or replace it for free. How long range are you looking to shootThe .270 really isn't a cartridge choice I'd start to use for long range shooting. There really aren't that great of bullets for the .270. That said I love the .270 Win for a hunting rifle and it is hard to beat at normal hunting ranges.

You actually bring up a good point and remind me that the 270 isn't ideal for long range. I think I'm just going to get a Leupold duplex for now. I was worried that the recoil might cause the scope to lose its zero on the mark ar. If anybody can convince my otherwise I may change my mind.

My brother is more knowledgeable in hunting rifles and had recommended I try a 270 so I did. If I recall, he told me with 150 grain I could reach 500 yards point target. It is funny that I tend to keyhole more shots with my Kel-tec su-16 using modified iron sights than I do with my Remington 798 which has an $80 Bushnell on it.

Thanks for the reply but if anybody can tell me why using a mark ar is a bad idea I would like to hear.

You have several choices under 400 with bullet drop compensating reticles. Check out Burris Fullfield II. Or Vortex Viper or Vortex Diamondback. The Burris and the diamondback run close to $200 some places $150. Both will handle the recoil from larger meaner calibers than the .270. The Vortex Viper will run closer to $400. All of these models are calibrated to have a hash mark in the crosshair very close to 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards. You have to shoot at those distances to confirm that your ammo is hitting on those marks but if it is not it will be very close. I have the Burris on one of my 30-06 rifles and i have the Vortex Viper on 2 of my 243's. The 30-06 is spot on at 100, 200, and 300 yards (I have not shot it past that). I have yet to shoot the 243's to those distances ( they are fairly new and time is limited these days).
I also have a Burris on my revolver that has the BDC reticle. It is calibrated and shoots to those marks at 50, 100, and 150 yards. I highly recommend that you try it. The BDC makes it easier to hit at longer ranges with less guessing about hold over.

Also the Vortex warranty is awesome, Forever, for any reason, free repair or replacement. Even if you are not the original owner.
