Thank you for your help. I have two S &W 38 specials. Serial number 296127 and 424607. I would like to know the model numbers, when they were mfged, and can they use the +p ammo. Again thanks for your help

I'm not Mike Irwin but I can help.
S&W reused those serial numbers on both the 5 and 6 shot versions of their revolvers at different time periods. So, I need to know whether they are 5 or 6 shot.

Jim is right, we need to know how many shots they are.

If, however, they are both 6 shot models, they should be K frame Military and Police Hand Ejectors.

With serial numbers that low, they would absolutely NOT be safe to fire with plus p ammunition.

I'm downstairs, and my books are upstairs, but I think that both of those serial numbers are 1920s or before.

Between 1902 and 1903 on the first, and 1904 on the second.

I know because Mike keeps me locked upstairs in the attic with all his books and Chia pets.

Tom,

I'm afraid you're off on those dates.

Both would be Model of 1905 4th changes, which didn't start production until 1915 or so.

You're right. I skipped straight to the appendix and should have realized that.

Layton actually gets the No-Prize, as he PM'ed me with the right dates a couple of hours ago.
