*Might* be moving to PRNJ...but I own firearms.

I live in Philadelphia, have a PA CCW, and may have to be forced to move to PRNJ after college this September. Try as I might, I cannot find any information on what I would have to do with my P99. Is there grandfathering? Do I have to do anything beyond registering the gun? Will they try to take it away from me? Packing.org didn't have anything on this topic, and I can't seem to google anything pertinent. Help!

I have no idea what the answer is, but you might try contacting the local police department or sheriff's office of the county you think you may be moving into.

your walther p99... why you brign it with you. If you are really felling paranoid get an FID card. Handgun permits in NJ are for purchasing, which you have already taken care of.

heck even if the smart gun law was in effect, you'd still be able to bring it as the law is on the transfer of firearms in NJ. Which you didn't do.

If you want a crash course on the NJ firearms laws translated into english, go here and pick up a copy. It even covers all the nitty gritty on moving here.

You won't be getting a CCW though, but I'm guessing you already knew that.

The only caveate with the p99 is that if you picked up any 16 round magazines, you need to block them to 15 rounds. Not having seen a p99 16 round mag, I have no idea how hard or easy this is.

however, like others, I suggest you do what you have to to stay away. If you drive a car, you will get whacked with an insane insurance charge as a new resident beyond the run of the mill insanity. IF you can find an insurer willing to write youa policy. Most of the doctors won't take new patients, and if they do, they don't take an awful lot of insurance. Homeowners insurance policies are getting ahrder and harder to get. REal-estate prices are insane. A 9 mile commute can take you 40 minutes. We swap out congressional candidates at the last minute, as well as try to appoint mafia figures head of the state police.. multiple times. In the summer traffic gets worse because of the beaches. in the winter The traffic gets worse because of the malls and the fact NYC has 8% sales tax and we don't. Cigarettes cost about $6 a pack and they want to tack another $1.30 tax on them.

And frankly it has made us, on average, a pretty surly bunch.

oh yeah, did I mention our state congress is insane enough to want to pass a "smart cigarette" bill. Looks exactly like the smart gun bill except it mandates the development of fire retardant cigarettes, cops aren't exempt, and the penalty for transferring a normal cigarette is $11,000.

Ditto. At the last minute, I turned down a job offer that was good in every respect except that I would have to live in NJ. I hated to give up CCW, so I started to research other aspects of life in NJ. The more I researched what it would be like to live there, the worse it got. Generally, the government is involved in every aspect of your life -- not just your gun hobby. For example, the town I would have lived in requires you to get a permit to prune your shrubs! You want to cut down a tree? You must get the approval of some committee! I don't know why any person would submit to such a sweeping loss of freedom.

Are you SERIOUS?

oh yeah.. I am serious as already pointed out.

As far as at2000 comments, well fro example in the town of south orange, they have deemed that you can't paint your house or fictures a contrasting color to the surrounding neighborhood. At the time I was working for contractor and we had to paint the outside of a car dealership. This ammounted to about a quarter mile of window trim about 1 inch wide. because of this radical change to the exterior, (going form chipped and damaged white to a sort of off white that would be like dropping a drop of orange and brown ina 5 gallon bucket of white) we were required to paint the flagpole this new color as well because the flagpole was painted a horribly disturbing plain old white.

Amazing stuff really.

Oh yeah, they also at one point tried to pass a law requiring that all cars on the road not be more than four years old. The only reason it didn't pass was because the classic car crowd got out and made a stink.

Heck, I've lived here my whole life and every day my wife and I count down how long it will be before we can leave for good!

Don't forget the law on the books which mandates "smart guns" when they become available.

Read Napien's book. Bottom line is that you must tow the line in this state. I've never been pulled over when I've had firearms in the back of my Chevy Avalanche - and I don't know anyone who's ever been asked "what is the capacity of that magazine," but I sure wouldn't want to have to spend the money to defend myself from an avoidable beef.

BTW, if you're moving near Trenton, check out the Falls Township Rifle and Pistol club. It's outstanding.

It's a lot easier to not move to NJ in the first place than to move here, get established and then move out of the state. Just the fact that you're on this forum suggests that you won't be happy in New Jersey.
There's a lot of very positive things about New Jersey, but the politics are very dysfunctional. The property taxes are rediculous as a direct result of the buying of votes on a massive scale. Leadership in government absolutely doesn't exist. And the people are angry and defeated as a result.
As a gun owner and an American you will not be happy here. There's so much wrong and yet very few people are willing to rock to boat in a positive direction. These are the same people who make it easier for tyrants to conduct "business". No more for me.
Times are changing, but the struggle is gonna be long and frustrating. It's not the end of the world if you move to New Jersey, but there's so much else out there that won't turn you into an angry person.
Just my humble opinion, of course.
Best wishes.

If you do move to N.J....................

We are not many (YET) but we are doing what we can to try and right that which is wrong when it comes to firearms and firearm ownership in this state.
